it's been an exciting year so far, with abstract science welcoming some the world's best and brightest talent to chicago: nightmare's on wax, caspa, booka shade, rusko, edit and kode9. now, we are excited to kick the summer off with three of berlin's most dramatic and innovative live performers--modeselektor and apparat--in their chicago debut as MODERAT!
-----------------------------------
>MODERAT
it would be convenient to label MODERAT a techno supergroup: two massive forces in electronic music pushing each other to new heights. but the dou known as MODESELEKTOR, gernot bronsert and sebastian szary, and shitkatapult label head APPARAT, sascha ring, first collaborated on an ep in 2003 for bpitch control, before shelving the project. six years later, MODESELEKTOR and APPARAT's status as underground stars--party revolutionaries and sonic innovators--has made for a highly anticipated album release and a debut tour headlining festivals across europe and north america (including montreal's mutek, barcelona's sonar and the montreux jazz festival).

>MODESELEKTOR
it's safe to say that MODESELEKTOR, the dou of gernot bronsert and sebastian szary, has crossed into electronic music stardom. all it took was one dedicated fan: thom yorke of RADIOHEAD. but that shouldn't obscure the years of dedicated toil in berlin's clubs and warehouses. bronsert and szary initially met in 1992, producing music under the alias fundamental knowledge. renamed as modeselektor in 1995--after a function on Roland RE-201 module--the dou released a series of 12"s on ellen allien's bpitch control label, paving the way for their breakout album in 2005, "hello mom!" the record's tremendous range--from warehouse techno to eurocrunk--and an exploding reputation for thrilling live shows, brought on a slew of remix offers. and with each remix and live show, MODESELEKTOR's fearless glitch-strewn admixture of techno, grime, dubstep and hip hop garnered new fans, including thom yorke, who lent guest vocals to their 2007 album "happy birthday!" the blessing of radiohead's pater familias, brought the dou a new legion of fans, culminating with a legendary headlining performance at montreal's MUTEK festival and a coveted slot opening for RADIOHEAD's german and japanese tours in 2008.

>APPARAT
apparat, aka sascha ring, is co-owner (with t.raumschmiere) of the shitkatapult label. since 1999, shitkatapult has chronicled the DIY-sound of berlin's techno renegades and refugees. their self-described aesthetic: "Every release is different. Digital high-speed attacks, groovy lownoise-loops, rocking shuffle-techno, funky micro-house tunes -- Shitkatapult has everything your electronically polluted heart wants and, if we have our way, everything your electronically polluted heart needs." by 2005, apparat's partner, t.raumschmiere, had whipped up a stateside hipster frenzy thanks to a stage show packed with punk rock antics--destroying keyboards and stripping down to his underwear while diving head-first into the stage monitors. apparat directs a similar intensity inward, chopping conventional techno, electro and experimental genres to bits and re-assembling them into a suprisingly warm and potent glitch-stew. a prolific artist with numerous lp's, ep's and remixes--including a prestigious bbc peel session--to his name, 2006 established ring's credentials as a dancefloor force, collaborating with ellen allien on the successful "orchestra of bubbles" album. 2007 saw the release of his most intense and critically acclaimed album, "walls", mixed and tweaked here in chicago by josh eustis and the late charlie cooper of telefon tel aviv.

>ABSTRACT SCIENCE
Broadcast every Thursday night on WLUW at 88.7 FM in Chicago and wluw.org, abstract science is "future music"—the constant evolution and influence of modern electronic music in its varied forms on a global level, from roots in the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s. In a time when the majority of music is mass-produced and highly disposable, abstract science engages it's audience with genuinely innovative and relevant programming, proving itself mandatory listening for those who realize that popular culture is neither. 2009 marks the twelfth anniversary of abstract science on the airwaves, boasting a history of over 2,000 hours of airtime, hundreds of hours of archives at abstractscience.net, as well as many successful club residencies and special events. Childhood friends, Chris widman and Henry Self first broadcast abstract science on KCOU 88.1FM in Missouri and, with the help of Luke Stokes, brought the show to WLUW in 2000. In addition to providing an educational and expressive blend of traditional radio programming and live dj mixes, the trio routinely work to showcase influential artists (such as Luke Vibert, Monolake, DJ Krush, Meat Beat Manifesto, Jaga Jazzist and Ryuichi Sakamoto) by recording exclusive live performances for re-broadcast on air and streaming online.
