I'm not really feeling any of this, of course that's just personal opinion. What isn't personal opinion is that putting some backpacker rappers who can't shift many units with their releases (even the biggest back-packer shit only sells 20/30k worldwide) are going to lead to dubstep blowing up seems a bit hyperbolic/misguided.

I think what is going to be blown is the load of backpacker dudes who are in to dubstep, which I think is quite a lot.

Pretty interesting... my favorite is the Alexander Spit & Rusko tune. It's good to see more people collaborating to make dubstep worldwide.

But seriously, I'm just waiting for Kurupt to hop on a track.

yeah, the problem i have with most of these is that the songs werent really created with fitting a voice around it in a mind, especially the rusko and chase and status ones, so they end up sounding too busy

hah! just found this thread today, glad it started so much discussion.

for me, this IS the summer that dubstep exploded, not just with MCs but dubstep in general. the thing is, to break into large markets in the US you need names that are known. I grew up in the midwest and trust me that the only things that make it big there are the ones that get played on MTV. What this means is that people will hear that beat and be like "what the hell IS that?!" and then investigate and learn about this entire underground of music that's been brewing and evolving for time. I'm not stating whether this is good or bad, I don't think ANYONE can make that judgment. But I do think it will happen.

I for one like this vibe a lot as I was into hiphop for a long time before dubstep and am especially into the sounds of people like the Living Legends. The instrumental choice is questionable sometimes and lots of people have mentioned that it's hard to hear the MCs over some of the raw wobbly basslines. I definitely agree with this but also think that it gives a new feel to hiphop which it badly needs.

Time will tell... :)

As to the Vex'd track it is a remix of scuba - twitch but I thought it was called satellites in the radio show, hence the naming. Not sure on the actual name of any of the mixtape tunes so I changed it back to twitch.

I've gotta agree with people saying the vocals don't add much. There's enough of a sound already with the original tunes - and to ensure the vocals don't clash they've gotta up the vocal and put the actual tune at the back of the mix. It totally kills the impact in that Mr Chips version.

Another thing is that what most of the MC's in this sample have to share isn't exactly compelling material. MC's who aren't repeating the same tiresome hip-hop cliches we're all familiar with might be required, and tunes which lend themselves to vocals better.

That third tune, however, proves to me at least that this idea has potential.

p.s. Just 'cause you're not feeling it doesn't mean you're an elitist. You don't have to say yes to everything.
