Perfectly EQ'in Kick Drum in Logic

Post by adam_misst » Thu Jun 04, 2009 10:56 pm

What is the best way to perfectly EQ your kick drum when working in Logic? What frequencies do I need to be cutting out and keeping in? What should be hitting where?
Cheers :)

Firstly you have to control click your logic executable and add the "-console" extension. This enables the console in logic so you can enter more advanced commands without having to go through the options menu.

Enabling Cheats in Logic

Start Logic with the console enabled, open the console by pressing the tilde key "~", enter "sv_cheats 1" into the console to enable cheats. If this is the first time you are enabling cheats they will not activate until you load a project or start a new project.

Congrats, cheats in Logic are activated!

for your channel strip i reccomend (this order) channel eq (bring up the analyzer so you can see the waveform) locut hicut compressor then another channel eq to perfect lol but basically use your ears and watch th frequency's, i find it best to then group your drums together and put an enhancer or something on that bus ie psp mixpressor or waves trackplug open up a drum preset on the enhancer and TWEAK to taste but its all about how it sounds there's no set way and obviously you might need to sidechain your kick to your bass, obviously if your layering ya kick bus the 2 kicks together and apply the process on the bus cutting frequncys on each layer before you group it.

your lucky i cant be bothered to carry on workin on my track atm otherwise there's no way i would've wrote all that.

or jus use up down left right a start 8) 8) 8)

Is it sad that I got this? I've played too much CSS :(

In seriousness, it is completely dependant on two things:
a) what kick drum sample you are using
b) what notes your bassline is playing

A good tip with dubstep is that you don't want that much sub in your kick becuase it gets lost on big systems. You want a relatively high peak (anywhere from about 75-115Hz depending on the sample you've used). I will generally try and leave the sub alone and just make it fit with the notes its playing/sound that I've used etc.

Probably the best way to do it is to use a good kick sample that naturally doesn't interfere with the kick and mix them together properly. That way you won't need to EQ either of them (well, minimal EQing) and they will sound better for it.

easiest? don't use an eq.

it depends on the song, the samples, the patterns, etc.

;)

ka-ching.

also, a kick lives and dies by its context. a kick that sounds kinda odd and off-focus when solo'd can fit a track PERFECTLY and sound huge. only problem is that most folks start with the drums, and when they start the drums they start with the kick-- so it becomes this holy grail quest for size, etc, when that's really dependent on context.

I've got a nice set of samples that I work with but its just recently when I've started looking for a different sounding kick that the problems occured!
You see for a long time I always used the same nice sounding kick EQ'd in the same way, but I fancied a change to develop my sound and here come the problems!
Thanks for the above though it's cleared the air for me a little bit and helped me out no end :)
Keep the comments coming though, the more the better!
(p.s-nice to see there are some useful people still on here!)

There is no answer to this question - its lilke that old much loved favourite - "How long is a peice of string?"

Play around with a hi pass filter on your kick while all the elements of the track are playing.

You could also try the tune with different kick samples - you will notice a big difference in how they each interact differently with the track.
