Being a noob I think this forum is sweet. I agree with evrything abz said. I like all the jokes and OT crap. People that get treated harshly usually deserve it, with their stolen software and no idea how to use it. I barely ever read stickies either, but there is some good info up there that would be a shame to lose. Having said that I think I hate scrolling a screens worth of stickies to get to the real posts.
I am happy that this place isint full of a bunch of eletist fucktards like the propellerhead forums.
I fucking love that I can swear the tnuc off this shit and it doesent get ****'ed.

Maybe the best option is just a sticky right up the top that says:
USE THE SEARCH BUTTON
or some shit
Ive been on this forum pretty much daily since i have joined and you can see by the amount of posts ive made, the forum is getting to the stage where you dont need to ask questions, just search.
And for me seeing someone complaining about the forum getting flooded by "how do i make wobblez?" is just as annoying as reading those posts in the first place.

I don't really get the rant here. Everything's been made easy for everyone. Is that the problem?
Most common questions (and much more imo) are answered in the stickies. Yes you have to spend some time reading bullshit but how about you do it, copy/paste the good stuff in a new thread and make it available for everyone?
As a side note, this forum was the best thing that happened to me production wise and I don't think there's much more (less?) to do to make it better (not to mention it was much more of a mess by the time).
If it feels wrong to some people and they can't think of anything to make it better then maybe the forum isn't the problem.
No offense intended. What I mean is forums are not the holy graal. It's full of people passing their working hours having some fun.
You want to be serious about production? Read books & magazines! THEY are written by professionals and some very good ones come incredibly cheap these days.

I wonder whether the solution is to leave the banter and jokes up for a while, but to periodically go through the more important (and bigger) threads and delete anything that isn't obviously informative.
Someone earlier pointed out that DSF isn't a Wiki. Perhaps we should make one? Or just add a whole load of dubstep-related info to Wikipedia! Might be a better way of organising the technical stuff.
On using the search function, I wonder whether noobs know how to use it properly. If you just bang in a couple of keywords you tend to get a lot of random results. It's only when you refine your search a bit that it starts to get useful. However, I'm not surprised people prefer to ask rather than search - it's part of what builds a community feel - so maybe we shouldn't sweat it too much.
Anyway, I just want to say that DSF still has a lot going for it. It remains a good place to find out about new music, sort out a production problem, hear new mixes, and so on. So big up to all the members who take the time to help others out.

This, and subforums are the answer I think. I really learned a lot from the production Bible, wiki-ing it would be a great idea! (Hell, I'dd even help moderate it!)Monotic wrote:Someone earlier pointed out that DSF isn't a Wiki. Perhaps we should make one? Or just add a whole load of dubstep-related info to Wikipedia! Any other forum I've ever been on has the exact same problems. People asking the same questions again and again. People complaining about it. People complaining about those people. In the midst of it all though is a lot of shared knowledge. This isn't a super-serious-professional resource. It's for banter and advice.
I have to say though, I couldn't be arsed going through a 20 page thread that wanders around several topics just to answer my particular question that may or may not get covered in that thread. Also deleting joke posts sounds like censorship. I think they're the best bits!

Plus i dont think theres anything wrong with the production forum at the minute except to stupid amount of "new tune up" that have been popping up over the last couple of week

I agree with all of these!nowaysj wrote:I do have an idea how to make these forums more useful -
1. The posting of finished dubs should be in another forum. We get a few repeat questions re wobble, but we get a WHOLE lot more, "check out my new sick toonage" from people we've never seen with like 8 posts total. Thats just spam. I know those posts are locked now, and I think it should stay that way.
2. Siloed threads - like all logic questions in one thread, all fl questions in another thread. These threads need to go away. What function do they serve? To organize? I think it would be more organized to have a thread about a topic - say 'the proper usage of fl's powerful peak controller' rather than fifty different topics about fl's functionality all crammed into one thread. If you believe in these consolidated threads, why not consolidate the entire forum into one thread, it would be super organized, only one thread to read!
3. Tracks in production - I think people should be able to start threads for tracks that they're working on and for which they are seeking production advice. It is through this process that people can really share production knowledge, and knowledge in practice, in real specific examples, not just 'low pass your kicks'. As it stands the tracks in development thread is siloed, w/ what, 500+ posts? Am I mistaken? I Mean, if every daw has a thread, and all song related production advice is in one thread, what the hell else is there to post in the production forum?

Why do people always complain about long posts and long threads?
If something needs explaining and discussing, and if it's a complex problem, it will generally need a lot of words to explain it!
If you 'haven't got the time' , then why are you on the internet?
But I do see the angle you're coming from. If you're a noob, then more than likely you're a noob to the forum, and how it works. And when you have a problem you just want to ask someone about it there and then. Hence many similar posts.

Thats not what the issue is, alot of the threads the information is spread around the place, like for instead the mixdown questions thread, the first post isnt an answer, and then macc's advice is spread here and there throughout 10 pages, so it is difficult to get an overall idea without taking notes while reading or something...Karmacazee wrote:Why do people always complain about long posts and long threads?

.
I therefore think these threads need to be cleaned up, either someone entirely rewrites them, in a production bible-esk pattern or a mod goes through and deletes all the posts that say stuff like "true dat" and that arent really useful...
The banter is a large part of this forum, but i think its place is in the day to day threads not the ones that are truelly aimed at informing...
I also think whoever it was above is right about doing problems by the element of production instead of the DAW as 1. Daws contain a huuge variety of problems and 2. Alot is interchangeable between daws...
Inregards to the "post your tunes threads" i think the finished tune one should definately be moved to the dubs section as it's all about finished trakcs and i think the WIP thread should stay...
