Warrior Dubz Review In Vice Magazine

I think i vaguely know who wrote this, and he is in no position to offer criticism

to tell u the truth i am workin as a music journalist in greece and the only thing i could write for mary ann hobbs was " the voice that makes me forget the bad things in life"

That review was definately in Vice as opposed to the Wire. The Wire's about as chin stroking as it gets but produces some real gems as far as I'm concerned, the Kode9 Invisible Jukebox a relevant case in point. Vice's music reviews reflect the very ethos of the publication: succinct, ironic, extreme viewpoints which sadly often reflect great truth. It's sort of like a lifestyle Private Eye, some great journalism veiled in vehement irony and satire.

Never quite known what to make of Vice

one minute they're 100% behind you, loving all that you do, constantly emailing you for news to put in their magazine...

... Next thing they mention you have a show on Radio One, are pessimistic about it and print an article quesioning how long you'll last on there.

Two weeks later they support a gig you're doing in NYC and send a reporter out with you who raves about it in the mag.

It seems they're into your stuff when it suits them.

The people I've met from the mag are alright people - I just can't stand the whole "we're too cool to be mainstream" stance the magazine takes. Its a good mag, with some very funny and interesting articles. I just wish they took a more artistic stance when considering reviewing music.

it makes me giggle a bit

but they're idiots in my opinion... there is little purpose other than self-satisfaction in what they do. it initially was worthwhile as an artistic endeavour, but now its played out and bate if you ask me

i dont think its difficult to write like that, and i dont think they reflect great truth very often, and when they do i think its more by chance than intention

Why does anyone even read The Wire anymore? I don't care about the review they gave the Warrior Dubz CD. The Wire is just pretention written in monkey feces.

don't worry about it..
most of the press about the record has been phemoninally good.. i feel blessed, and delighted for all the artists involved... it's a great testimony to their phenominal creative powers...
all the journos who've reviewed it seem to have focused heavily on the dubstep... there's been hardly any mention made of the grime, d&b and dark dancefloor on 'Warrior Dubz' at all...
the press have gone mad for dubstep recently... but in truth very few people have really understood it, and interpreted it as beautifully and with such emotional fluency in print as Melissa Bradshaw in Plan B magazine...

Can we maybe change the title of this thread? Its a bit unfair to Wire seen as we've established the review was actually in Vice...and you shouldn't take anything they say seriously or get upset about it imo.

The Wire this month is very good, one of the best for ages. The Grime mixtape review is good, because its honest about where the scene is at the moment. It certainly doesn't write grime off as loads of other people have been doing.

I like the Wire. Philip Sherburne's critical beats is great. He occasionally covers dubstep and is generally favourable towards it. Vice is a bit waste, some funny stuff but far too Nathan Barley in general and the music reviews are complete jokes.

some of vice is really funny, but i get the impression theyre a bunch of nerdy shoreditch tossers on google 24/7 looking for 'news' delibrately trying to offend anyone at any given chance, given nobody they insult actually takes them seriosuly or reads vice this forces them to try even harder.

Dont think anyone should pay particular interest to the one line music reviews, this is probably writtien by the same dullard who rides dubsteps cock one week and gets his glasses steamy at the thought of creating some anti dubstep controversy the next wk, then hasnt even got the balls to use his real name for the review, i wouldnt call it music journalism.

well the internet is only the medium for reviews it doesn't define the quality of them, just means theres alot more out there - some shite , some good. for example, i think many would agree k-punk, blackdown and simon reynolds are writers/bloggers of the highest order. i'd rather read what they have to say than some stock wh-smith fodder.

and shock horror, some people write for print and on the net!

and w.dubz is great... feeling versus and of course cha vocal mix...(been ages that one)

i was being specific to vice's reviews and afaik u cant buy that in wh smith cos its free

anyhoo, im not sure what ur getting at, im agreed that warrior dubz is a great album just criticising vices ability to write about anything other than attention seeking contraversy, im always of the opinion u should listen first read the reviews next, i would never buy music solely based on a review

As a music reviewer, I'm naturally biased on this. However, I appreciate any site that offer sound samples for releases, whether it's the review venue (Brainwashed does mp3 samples for album reviews), record label, or retailer (God bless Boomkat).
