Are picture disc vinyl worse quality than black ones?

Post by Alty » Fri Jun 12, 2009 12:32 pm

Or are there any other disadvantages?

I saw the Skream remix of Night Vision on redeye records and I'm going to buy it unless there are any drawbacks...

Generally picture discs are heavier (and often more cumbersome) for cueing up, etc. As they're usually pressed with a heavier vinyl, less chance of getting warped/spoiled vinyl though...

Personal preferrence really innit?

I tend to just go for a regular pressing as its the tunes I'm after, not the pretty pictures (plus its harder to read the grooves on brightly coloured vinyl/picture discs in a dark club...)

Ah what the hell I'll just buy the picture one. It's kind of a cool novelty thing to show people...

the picture disc (and sometimes the coloured) tends to have low hiss in the pressing... check the run-in grooves on a black compared to a pic-disc.

I got told many moons ago when i worked in a record store that picture discs arent really made to be played, they are more of a collects item.

I hate picture disc vinyls. Like said before, I cant see any grooves on them at all which doesnt make it any easier for mixing

Maybe I should learn my tunes more lol

Get the black one chief, i got the picture one and it was jumping everytime i was trying to cue it up on a club system, and then got an annoying jumpy scratch in the intro of night vision

im usually normally really carefull with vinyll so dont get too many scratches

Both big tunes though the second drop on the gothtrad remix is mental

the picture disc hasnt jumped once when ive played.. if anything it seems more stable due to its weight.. have had no problems with it!

Yeh, they do sound worse generally; there are two layers of thinner vinyl pressed outside of the image.

Picture discs and coloured discs are pretty much the same. If anything, coloured discs are more likely to be porer quality becasue picture discs, while they are essentially a coloured vinyl, they use clear vinyl pellets that dont have any dye added to them. Coloured vinyl has dyes added to them and, depending on the colours, some are worse for sound quality than others - usually its the colours that have a more metallic element to them.

The difference is like the difference between Wav and Flac... none noticeable.
