People can and have been making music on out of date computers for a long time and still make really good music. New hardware and technologies will always be coming out so this is nothing new at all.

By the time you have all you're ardware/software working with USB3, USB 4 will be out so who cares.

The way I see it (moderate/extreme computer user)

Trends do change, whats current is always changing.

I built within my budget, the machine does everything I could want it to at the mo, I didn't scrimp on anything but I also didn't go with any of the new new top o' the top equipt. Ie not Tripple channel Ram, Ie not Quad Core Cpu, Ie Not 1gb dedicated graphics card.

Instead I read, read, read read read and read before buying, because, like most people money isnt that easy to come by and no-one wants an unstable regretable system.

So after I read read read and read, found a nice stable platform, I looked at cpu options, finding a Dual core cpu that was easy enough to clock to 3ghz.

Then I baught 4gb of fast ram, used my Old/Current hard drive, Put windows 7 on- and Hey Presto -

I had acheived a perfectly stable, very modern, super fast pc build, for approx £400

This is now not only my reason pc (I know its not cubase but I Have run live with plenty of VST's) but also my media centre and gaming rig -

All I mean to say is, Know Exactly what you want, and its easy enough to acheive, and please please, Don't buy an off the shelf rig,

ESPECIALY NOT AN "AUDIO WORKSTATION" branded machine.

Unless of course you are willing to pay an extortionate ammount for the possibility of peace of mind in terms of hdd data recovery.

I think the time for buying a PC is not the worst, prices are no more that high as years ago, and you will always be struggeling with newer standards.

Remember back in the days they taped a sound and created echos by using speakes which was bought to a definit distance... . Creativity doesnt depend on newest hardware or software as said before!

You guys are a plucky bunch, and I applaud you for raising my spirits about this whole thing. Mind you, my need for a new machine isn't just gearlust or "I just want it!" bidness - my other multi-use 2000 machines appear to be on their last legs as far as doing serious audio work, so it'd be nice to be up and running on the new PC well before everything comes tumbling down. It's all backed up though, so whatever.

Nothing's gonna stop me from making tunes. I'll play pots and pans in the kitchen and record it with my boombox, then bounce the channels down using a VCR's audio outs! Casios wif distortion pedals! Heh.

The build-yr-own route was how I wanted to go originally, but after seeing the warranty put to use on data recovery with my music partner's PC when it had a critical system error - I think that's one luxury I might actually want to spring for.

Any off-the-shelf models/build configs out there y'all are interested in? Builders with solid customer support track records you'd recommend? I'm open to any and all suggestions here (except that First ting in post #1

^Fruity Loops 1 is exactly what Angolan Kuduro producers are using, watch the Buraka Som Sistema Rull Bull Music Academy video. Its quite interesting

i remember seeing some video on xlr8r i think about some african producers that go nuts with very old cracked versions of FL thats why i brought it up, but i didnt think it was FL 1

built my current desktop machine minus soundcard for about 350$ and it's a fucking BEAST

the laptop i built for 1200$ 5 years ago to work on can be easily surpassed now for around 400$ (and i can still churn out the hiphop bangers on it after 5 years of hard work, it's just now starting to have issues with the touchpad)

running TinyXP (32bit)
dual-core 3.something Ghz intel with a supersized heatsink
4 gb ram
512mb dual display videocard
750w psu

far from 'state of the art', but runs like a champ especially for how ubercheap it was to build. Perfect for my home dedicated work machine

Rule number 1 - never buy first generation technology

Rule number 2 - any questions, refer to rule number 1.

Staying 2 years behind the curve allows me to buy still powerful PC technology at reasonable prices without having to sit on the line with a paid for tech support agent for many hours a week trying to figure out why the hell features that used to work currently do not. My specs are still good enough to run just about all audio editing applications I would ever need.

Dont try to tell me that you NEED the absolute cutting edge technology to make music, as dope drum and bass was made on Atari Falcon computers with 64 MEGs of RAM with Fast Tracker software back in the day. Much of that stuff is more sophisticated that music you hear today as far as programming is concerned.
