setting up midi keyboard in cubase.done. but no audio.

I've setup my alesis micron with midi ins to outs through my edirol ua25.

It has been recognized on cubase and I can even draw midi in which is quite pleasing.

However I cannot hear any sounds from the micron.

Do I need to setup an audio cable along side the midi ones? Do the midi cables only send the information and not the noise?

I can setup a vst so my alesis is acting as a controller - which again is quite pleasing. However I understood that midi could transmit audio aswell as the information.

ok audio cable is hooked up too. I can hear what I'm playing as it is midi recorded into cubase.

However once it is recorded I cannot get it to play back with sound.

any tips?

you're just recording the midi notes it sounds like
you need to record the audio output to an audio channel

open a new audio channel, make sure the input is set to the input channel your micron output is connected to
set it to record mode and solo it and the midi track linked to it

This method kind of sucks though - it presumes that I can play the keyboard without going back and tweaking/quantizing the midi notes: i.e. play perfectly first time through.

I can't play keyboard for shit.

I was hoping I'd be able to record my melody shitly with an awesome micron sound, then go back and tweak the shit out of it. I can do this with my vsts but will i not be able to do this with hardware?????

think you need to delve into your cubase manual or some tutorials and learn some of the basic features like recording

I'm cool with recording in general.
Audio channel is linked to the midi channel in the sense that they both have the same ins and outs.

It records as I play my initial attempt. However once I have midi notes all quantized and fixed and I then try and record the fixed midi to the audio track, all I get is a flat line.

you have to have record mode turned on on your audio channel as well
also if your audio interface has multiple inputs make sure it's set properly on your audio channel

record enable is selected on both. It's driving me nuts...I'm sure I'm close to solving this.

I really appreciate your help man. Sorry for being such a chore.

I do have 2 inputs and am only using one at the moment - however there are no options on the channel allowing me to select a numbered input;

it just says edirol ua 25 stereo in and edirol ua 25 stereo out on the ins and outs.

I'll try and puzzle it out.

What is it youre trying to do again? Ive never had to use a seperate audio channel aswell as a midi channel. Or an audio wire, although ive had to use usb and midi cable for mine. But never needed an audio channel for playback.

add your input/ouput bus as your soundcard dictates so all your channels are visable

all channels are visible in vst connections - I checked that earlier.

well make sure when you play your micron that you're getting signal on one of your input channels, then make sure that channel is your selected input on your audio channel you are using to record

may need to go in and adjust your input levels via your asio driver
