Microphone help please.
Can anyone reccomend a decent mic for under £100? Want to be able to use it for recording speech and vocal sounds in my bedroom studio. May also use it to record my vocals for tracks though these will probably be vocodered or fucked up in some way. Will also use it when/if I get to play live for beatboxing with Abletons looper and to possibly m.c with.
I've seen a Shure SM 58 for £87 in studio spares but I'm not shure(sorry). Would greatly appreciate any advice. Thanks.

don't know why you'd be unshure about purchasing the sm57, but it now man... It's gonna be my first mic choice when I go to buy one
edit: doesn't matter what mic you use you can still vocode/fuck shit up afterwards
if you wanted to use it live you may lean towards the 58 more due to the polar pattern. However if you were using it for studio use more then then 57 is your friend.
single difference between the 57/58 = different polar pattern

Another thumbs up for SM57 here. I use one and its fine for everything I've needed it for so far!

Hmm...
I always understood it that although they are essentially identical mics, differentiated by a ball grille with pop shield, and a tighter, flatter grille on the 57, they were designed/prefered for certain roles. The acoustic effects of the different grilles producing the different responses/sound/characteristcs of each mic.
SM58: Vocals, general purpose.
SM57: Drums, snares, instruments.

yeah but you need a whole heap of (ideally really good-sounding) gain to make an sm7 really shine. unless he's spending bank on a good-sounding pre, i think the 57 or 58 is a great place to start.Future One wrote:If it's gonna be mainly for vocals I'd suggest a Shure SM7B.
