Chase and Status - Streetlife, what on earth are they doing?

Post by miscreant » Sat Jun 27, 2009 11:39 am

I'm at work just now so cant post the audio but a quick youtube search should bring it up. I'm fully aware of how to make sub bass and i'm fully aware of different ways of making sub bass sound better, however, their bass in this tune is just ridiculous, it even kicks through on shitty laptop speakers yet it sounds so clean at the same time. I know that they are amazing producers in their own right but anyone got any ideas as to how theyre getting such a boomy widespread bass?

I have this in my reference folder and it *very* audibly distorts with the bass. Appalling.

Great mix, great sound, pushed too hard, or pushed in the wrong way.

Even if it is distorted it still sounds sick as fuck! A lot of the time when something is audibly distorted it sounds shit but they get away with it. Oh chase and status you badbwois. They wear some fucking bent as fuck trendo hats but they can smash up dancefloors!

Oh no, it sounds great, considering. It'd just sound better not distorted, that's all I'm saying :)

I'd 100% say not. It's just a detuned sine/lp'ed square deal with lots of (nice) compression, loud. It's not massively complicated.

MaxxBass kills bass more than enhances it.

I've got that plugin actually, use it sometimes but notice that the effects i get with it muddy my bass up most of the time, i havent ever been taught how to use it properly - is it one of those plugins where i'm best just leaving it alone?

It's completely shit :)

Cheap distortion + LP filter. No more than that. You can easily understand why it muddies your mix when you know it works like that.

'Proprietary magical MaxxBass algorithm'
