virtual DJ it may seem kinda cheesy but with a proper sound card you can use torq and serato and any other time code CD or vinyl for just starting out is a pretty good choice
just a though i have it on my laptop just incase my serato crashes or something i have a program that i can actualy mix live from my laptop even with no sound card also it has the ability to broadcast a radio station from your laptop
just a thought

Haha stay away from Virtual DJ as it does the work for you from what I've been told, mixing is like 6th sense and a skill!

Really good free site with video lessons, I've been mixing for awhile now and I'm still learning new tricks off it!
Good luck!

i have been playing records since the mid 90's yes it is cheating if you use the cheats sink i mean beat sinc but you can use it just like serato or torq or tracktor or any other thing but with the digital mixing set ups they all tell you how fast each track is going when you make pitch adjustments any way so they all cheat me personaly i learned on gemeni belt drives but that was a long time ago use the beat sinc feature so that you can get an understanding of how to match a beat then give it a go without it your soundcard that you use for production should be able to run the time codePsylent wrote:Haha stay away from Virtual DJ as it does the work for you from what I've been told, mixing is like 6th sense and a skill!

I hear you. All this new digital stuff just makes standard mixing 10x easier. I am only interested in hearing people use digital software in a way that is not possible with two hands and a bag of records. You got to be pushing things to another level and not just doing standard mixing. I have heard some sets done using digital software and they have done some really impressive tricks that are impossible by a single person to do.five-ohh-what wrote:

Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
i know i had a bunch of friends that dj oldskool house and breaks and all they really do is beat match and transition from track to trak and they refuse to except the digital revolution (I only play vinyl ) and then the see some random kid that really knows his serato or traktor or what ever
and they hear some crazy trick that they have not seen since they last 3x6 set they heard early 2000 and the next day they are at guitar center buying a serato box its so funny

Traktor is the sickness my man.Neurotik wrote:Thanks! Thanks alot for the link too, i'm definately on that! I'm sure to find that very useful. Im messing around with Virtual DJ atm, it does kinda have that feel to it so i get what you mean. My other mate's offering me his cd decks, so i'll definately get some use from them if i can find two spare rewritable cds lying around. I was also just looking at NI Traktor, and had a quick look over the BCD 3000 controller which does't look bad for around £200 and Tracktor LE included.

traktor is it!!!
mixing to me, is ALL about hearing, moving the pitch around to match the beat isnt that hard once you can hear exactly what u need to do to the pitch.
so if u spend a lot of time on traktor just using your mouse to mix, you will gain a lot of hearing skill, in terms of seperating the beats but listening to them both at the same time. once you have the ability to hear a single beat in your cue headphones, this becomes way easier and then all you have to do is move the pitch around.
also spend a lot of time watching what local DJs do with the pitch

Not trying to be a dick or rude or anything, but could you try to use a bit of punctuation and capitalization? Your messages are hard to read like thatfive-ohh-what wrote:i know i had a bunch of friends that dj oldskool house and breaks and all they really do is beat match and transition from track to trak and they refuse to except the digital revolution (I only play vinyl ) and then the see some random kid that really knows his serato or traktor or what ever
