LOL@ some of the responses on this thread. bwoy.

I have a question (for anyway that's been on this planet 25 years +)...

Do you think there is a reason Western Mass Culture (US/UK in particular) has become increasingly 'dumbed-down' throughout the last decades when you would expect it to 'progress' to a more enlightened understanding of life and ourselves as science and technology grows in capability?

Is there a force behind this?

This is the one recurring thought and sign that makes me think there is a force or forces (ie. media) at work with a conscious strategy.

"Credible sources", from whom, who says they are credible? Just because government institutions say that this is the truth does not mean that it is the truth.

You all beleieve in something right? Then just because a few people say that these things happen does not mean that they are not true. Lots of people believe in Christianity, does that mean its true?

I dont sit in a dark room watching all the stuff I put infront of you, I just wish for you to see another perspective. Im interested in the truth and music.

I bet a lot of people didnt like dub step until Skreams La Roux remix, that does not mean that the tunes made previously wernt credible. It will be only a matter of time until the truth is revealed to all and then you can discredit my opinion if you wish.

But how do you know the non government stuff is actually also credible or actually put out by governments to make you think they are all powerful ( now that is a conspiracy!!) or take you mind of all their constant fuck ups.

And idea when the truth will come out?? According to some religious enthusiast i ken he reckons 11/11/11 is gonna be big. Personally im not too worried.

I agree with the logic. One man telling you something should be no more reliable than another man telling you something. The difference is that when you call out things like the LHC project, which is run by physicists from all sorts of different organisations (public, private and voluntary) then you really do have a tough job convincing people that it's not a credible source. Physicists can prove their assertations about the universe with practical examples.... we have iPod Nanos, we have global communications, we have the internet, we have the internal combustion engine, we have satellite TV and we have nuclear weapons.... physics works. Those people carry far more credibility than some dude with a website.

By credible I was referring to scholarly texts and articles based on evidence, case studies, proof and multiple cross citations between other academics, as opposed to youtube videos and books based on presumption with very weak sources, lacking cross citation, lacking proof and wholly lacking credibility. The government has no control over academic output and i could point you to couuntless articles, journals and books across every single academic subject that would support this. Part of the role of academia is to critique the status quo, the powers that be, or the traditional strain of thought, and do so in a way that is credible not based on myth or presumption. This in turn helps development and progress.
I think you are missing the point of what I refer to as credibility.

And I wasn't intending to make a harsh dig at you with the tin foil comment, but seriously shape shifters, wtf! Where are the credible sources you use to support this argument that shapeshifters are in control of CNN..!

the reason is technology and ease of access, people want everything quick and simple enough for everyone to understand, people used to have to sit down and read books, now they just look at bullshit on tv/youtube. That being said there are probably more educated people on the planet now than there ever was.

Surely it's how that technology is used and who is in control of it?

Technology is not an agent in itself.

before when you only had two tv channels the programmes had to be a higher quality. When there were only books, each book published was a serious financial risk to the publishing house so they had to be of value. Now anyone can set up a blog spouting nonsense, and tv channels need to be filled with content no matter how cheap.

But it's a disproportional increase in the amount of dumbed down content on nearly every mainstream medium.

I don't think it's a case of demand/supply.

The education system plays a part here as well (if there is a demand side) but I think beyond that you are going into tinfoil hat territory.

will there ever be an effective system of government for human beings, or will our imperfect nature always lead to it being corrupted?

Agree with all of that.

I'm starting to think that is how humans are probably happiest... however, the advance of society and technology has done wonderful things (including creating the massive electronics companies that created all our beloved synths and computers and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop that taught us how to use them) and so I hope it rumbles on forward... I'm a pie-eyed geek at heart and, as much as I'd like to do it right now, I'd rather think of the future of humanity as living to 500 and exploring the galaxy rather than sitting around getting stoned and raising chickens. :)

I'd rather have a spaceship with chickens and synths tbh

I wouldn't agree with this at all. I know plenty of people undertaking phds which are in no way conventional or in line with popular thinking ranging from people writing about rhetoric in British politics or the evolution of electoral administration to a marine biologist studying muscles.

They are in no way circular.

Furthermore if academia was predominantly circular how come there are constant developments of new schools of thought, or breakthroughs in science...!

I agree with this in part.

And I too would like my own land, chickens and crops. :)

There is also this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetic_Us ... Technology

If that gets into the general plant / crop population then we are fucked. If it does not its still going to fuck people finanically because they'll have to keep going back to these companies to buy seeds.
