I agree with Skream that having a biffta or two half way through making the tune can give you a good idea of how people are going to hear your tune when they listen to it stoned. Plus when i do that it gives me a better buzz about the tune and helps me just get on with it.

They start to build a fantasy world wherein they believe they are happy, that all of their needs are met, and that they are enjoying their lives, when the fact of the matter is that they hate themselves and hate what they've done to their lives and have to smoke just to forget the truth and maintain their fantasy.

That is some sad shit. Maybe not as far gone as the hordes of staggering crack heads, but still, completely lost to the world and themselves.
Basically this.
Happens way too often.

to be honest, while i would support the legalisation and govt control of all drugs like many elements of UK government etc are, i would probably still have weed controlled extremely strictly.

thing is, you hear so much bullshit about drugs, the average kid sees a talk to frank advert saying itll send you schizo and very reasonably they'll just think 'oh, thats just bullshit', which is fair enough because so much of what we're told about drugs IS bullshit. it's a shame.

I know a lot of people like this, mainly dealers or the people who hang around at a dealer's house all day. It is sad, but i do think it is a problem more with people in general than with weed. We are made in such a way that makes taking drugs extremely rewarding and pleasurable.
I do enjoy smoking, and smoke once (or twice maybe if i'm with mates) every evening, but i never feel like it is the main focus in my life. If i was constantly baked i would never be able to play my guitar, write music or produce stuff. I would never want this to happen!

It's very easy for people who have nothing going for themselves to fall into a pattern of drug abuse.

Any mind altering chemical taken all day every day will fuck you over. Weed, i believe, is just the one easiest to use responsibly and with the least amount of harm. And it's fun!

they may have turned for other reasons tho. There has not been enough long term research into skunk becuase it has not been around long enough tbh.

Also, i read in an article that the risk of developing full blown schizophrenia is not much higher for cannabis users (cant remember if they mean heavy users or what, i assume so) after other factors are taken into account such as a broken home etc etc.

There is however, very good though not conclusive proof that there is a specific cannabis psychosis, that comes on after an extended amount of heavy use in susceptible people. But people usually recover completely after abstaining.

Its not that i don't believe your friends have tried to kill you solely from smoking, but i find it hard to imagine. I would have thought there must be other factors that maybe you didn't know about. And for it to happen to so many of your friends is strange.
Me and my friends have always been pretty sensible suburban kids, though one is on the brink of a serious alcohol problem and is only 17. Like father like son eh?

your friends aren't building a fantasy world because they smoke weed. they are building a fantasy world because they are fantasy prone, and probably depressed, along with other psychological problems. blaming their actions on weed is ignorant, when they need actual psychological help, and not condescension from a former friend.

Everything in moderation, minus the harder stuff.....I've yet to try shrooms. I usually like to write sober and blaze after....Maybe a shot of jameson to wake me up in such a boring process...

bs

they probably had a psychotic illness which was triggered by pot, it could also be triggered by an accident, alcohol, traumatic experience, roadrage, medicine or just a bad day... don't blame it on pot alone because it's not the cause but the accelerator...

I'm from holland, probably the country where they smoke the most pot (percentage wise), and yes I've seen people live in fantasy worlds, or be psychotic, and yes they smoked pot, but guess what, they also took amfi's and other crap and/or they had a history of abuse or other traumatised exprience which causes psychotic illnesses... the other 99% who smokes pot? No problem wahstoever,...

p.s. sorry if I sound so harsh, don't ment to diss you or call you a liar and it sucks that your friends did that to you and themselves but to blame it on pot alone is wrong.

*edit*

here's the list which was published in holland. it's from an independant agency who evaluate drugs on their toxins, effects and long-term effects, according to these lists drugs are forbidden or legalized in holland. (it's in Dutch but you should be able to translate it with babelfish or something.)
http://www.rivm.nl/bibliotheek/digitaal ... s_2008.pdf

I've red it and according to the list cannabis can trigger pyschotic effects on unstable people or people who've had traumatised experiences. There's no evidence to believe that cannabis creates psychotic effects... lol, if that was true half of Holland would be mental :-)

btw, just thinking, amfetamines are known for their psychotic effects on long-term. (Schizofrenia and stuff), maybe combining those with cannabis it accelerates the process ;-)

From an interview with my uni's student paper, he also said something about it being bullshit that people like ray charles played better when high, but i can't remember the exact quote.

Thoughts?

A nice spliff does wonders for killing time playing with a synth, I think, I cannot remember tbh.

A lot of the Beatles' work was written on acid. It can't really make you creative, or at least enhance creativity imo. It just skews your perception of what sounds good. Everything sounds good when high as High Contrast points out.

Acid is the best to get the juice flowing without a doubt. Loads of musicians and famous painters did some of their best work while tripping!

i absolutely disagree that everything sounds good when your high. loads of stuff sounds terrible under the influence, sometimes stuff that sounds alright sober.

however i dont recommend trying to make a track under the influence of anything stronger than a few beers or spliffs. mostly because (in my experience) it warps your perception of how the mix sounds, and makes it too easy to get stuck in a trance or distracted or forget what you are doing.

i would say try and take inspiration from some of your experiences on drugs though. psychedelics in particular are very good at opening you to music and showing you deeper stuff from it.
