Richie Hawtin is has been pioneering electronic music for nearly 20 years. Give the guy some respect.
Sure, ditchin vinyl isn't what everyone should do, but think about it, he makes minimal, hardly a style of music that is going to be enhanced by vinyl. I challenge anyone to listen to a few minimal tunes on vinyl and on 320kbps MP3 and tell me that you can hear the difference.
Vinyl vs MP3 is a moot argument anyway, it basically comes down to personal taste, style of music, quality of sound system, availability of vinyl (you smarmy london mob don't know how lucky you are living in the home of the dubplate)

Mp3s are a pain in the ass. Its much easier for me to get/ use vinyl. Screw bringing some CDsmp3s or a laptop to the club. I can't stand seeing some dildo on stage playing some crap mp3. Screw Ritchie Hawtin. He wouldnt know spontaneous creativity if it slapped him in the forehead.

Hawtin's a dick
His music's always been shit IMO.
he's a bit wrong about the vinyl and mp3 un-noticable difference although i think the high frequency cut-off on vinyl is actually slightly lower than digital audio (17khz compared to the 20khz you get with digital). The main thing is the bass which is much better quality on vinyl. Also, the interfacing is very important.
Still though, you can't really disrespect Richie Hawtin he does have great creative ability, just check out the Plastikman stuff and DE9 - closer to the edit (easily one of my favourite mix cds). He takes minimal music and makes it sound just a bit more interesting.

You do realize you just insulted numerous DJs in this scene don't you? For example: All of Anti Social, Kromestar, Oris Jay, Headhunter, 2562, Breakage, Benny Page all use cdjs and all absolutely kill it.Sight wrote:I can't stand seeing some dildo on stage playing some crap mp3.
I used to be militantly supportive of vinyl with the whole "vinyl forever" mentality but to be honest I couldn't care less anymore how a DJ plays his music as long as it's good music.
P.S Richie Hawtin >>>>>> You
Cheers
Ok, I will. Give me a vinyl and then a 128 of the same track. I will tell you which one is which.jinxkal wrote:''I challenge anyone to listen to a few minimal tunes on vinyl and on 320kbps MP3 and tell me that you can hear the difference.''

"dubstep" is about the low sub bass, vinyl pissis all over cds and mp3s in this area. if it didnt then i would agree with what Hawtin is saying, but the fact is it does.
i dont understand why alot of the big djs play alot of cds and mp3s in there sets, the overall sound quality of there sets is weaker because of this.
vinyl is phatter by a ton, play off vinyl.

Yeah, it's totally sweet to have vinyl, vinyl is nice. Same is true of comics, movies, cds, books. Real vs digital can be debated on all these and in all cases I think that having something tangible in your hand is always nicer than a digital reproduction. What about 320???? Ok, fair enough, Give me a 320 mp3 in one hand and a vinyl in the other, oh shit, hang on a minute..........
BUT
In the particular case of comparing the audio quality of vinyl vs mp3 (or WAV, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, etc etc) there are a few things that people seem happy to disregard in their praise and criticism of either.
Firstly, audio quality at the end of the day relies solely on the system. You can listen to all the vinyl you want and if you pump it through some cheap ass amp and speaker combo, you are going to hear shit. Likewise, listening to compressed audio on a high end audiophile system is going to be unpleasant. Club systems deliver sound in a completely different way to a home hi-fi or someone's car stereo. Clearer and more powerful low end reproduction is common and yes, vinyl will sound much better to most than CD (as steshine mentioned, hi frequency reproduction is also different and CD/MP3 can be painful, personally my ears are sensitive to high frequency and therefore I don't like that particular dynamic.)
The second thing I would like to mention is the stereo image on CD/vinyl vs MP3. Many people who criticise MP3 in particular complain of poor stereo reproduction, inability to hear the locations of different musicians in an orchestra or ensemble is a often mentioned. In this case, I propose that the "type" of music you are listening to will decide whether or not this particular quality of MP3s is annoying or invisible. Classical music or jazz etc will lose a lot but I'm quite confidant that Richie Hawtin's bleeps and bloops will sound every bit as good on 320kbps MP3 as they would on CD or vinyl for that matter. If that wasn't the case, I doubt he would be such a huge supporter of the format (outside the fact that I assume he has some stake in Traktor.)
There are other things such as which encoder was used etc but I've run out of steam now. I apologise for the waffling but it's something that I have a keen interest in and love discussing so

Personally, I DJ using MP3 since I use Ableton which allows me to perform on synths etc as well as mix tunes which I think is exciting and would just not be feasible with turntables. Big respect to turntablists though of course!
Finally, as Signus said
to be honest I couldn't care less anymore how a DJ plays his music as long as it's good music.
