If you can take the heat and make it snapping your fingers and beatboxing while slapping some spoons on your leg plus tap dancing then more power to you.
Off topic but that totally just made me think of this crazy cat. The guy makes all his own instruments, weird synths and this wild spaceman get-up

But you are right, he's a dick for saying vinyl isn't profitable. I for one hope that vinyl is around forever. I'm certainly never getting rid of what vinyl I do have :)
The guy knows about selling techno on vinyl more than any of us ever will, and if he says its isnt profitable then fair play, he also says in the interview that minus will ALWAYS keep making vinyl, so he's not really that much of a dick if hes doing something he's personally against just for the vinyl 'freaks' that are still out there

Exactly. Honestly some of the idiots on this forum are quite amazing.

Yeah, it's totally sweet to have vinyl, vinyl is nice. Same is true of comics, movies, cds, books. Real vs digital can be debated on all these and in all cases I think that having something tangible in your hand is always nicer than a digital reproduction.

BUT

In the particular case of comparing the audio quality of vinyl vs mp3 (or WAV, FLAC, OGG, AIFF, etc etc) there are a few things that people seem happy to disregard in their praise and criticism of either.

Firstly, audio quality at the end of the day relies solely on the system. You can listen to all the vinyl you want and if you pump it through some cheap ass amp and speaker combo, you are going to hear shit. Likewise, listening to compressed audio on a high end audiophile system is going to be unpleasant. Club systems deliver sound in a completely different way to a home hi-fi or someone's car stereo. Clearer and more powerful low end reproduction is common and yes, vinyl will sound much better to most than CD (as steshine mentioned, hi frequency reproduction is also different and CD/MP3 can be painful, personally my ears are sensitive to high frequency and therefore I don't like that particular dynamic.)

The second thing I would like to mention is the stereo image on CD/vinyl vs MP3. Many people who criticise MP3 in particular complain of poor stereo reproduction, inability to hear the locations of different musicians in an orchestra or ensemble is a often mentioned. In this case, I propose that the "type" of music you are listening to will decide whether or not this particular quality of MP3s is annoying or invisible. Classical music or jazz etc will lose a lot but I'm quite confidant that Richie Hawtin's bleeps and bloops will sound every bit as good on 320kbps MP3 as they would on CD or vinyl for that matter. If that wasn't the case, I doubt he would be such a huge supporter of the format (outside the fact that I assume he has some stake in Traktor.)

There are other things such as which encoder was used etc but I've run out of steam now. I apologise for the waffling but it's something that I have a keen interest in and love discussing so :P

Personally, I DJ using MP3 since I use Ableton which allows me to perform on synths etc as well as mix tunes which I think is exciting and would just not be feasible with turntables. Big respect to turntablists though of course!

Finally, as Signus said
to be honest I couldn't care less anymore how a DJ plays his music as long as it's good music.
See you didnt get all pissed because you understand what the hell is going on. If you make it playing a laptop and all MP3s fine. I've see many DJs and artists do it with skill and blow me away. I see Djs play good MP3s all the time.

If you can take the heat and make it snapping your fingers and beatboxing while slapping some spoons on your leg plus tap dancing then more power to you.

I'm still going to draw the line at people bringing shit music up there. If Kromestar played a set of crap mp3s this critic would call him out the same as anyone else.

Ritchie Hawtin >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Ok, so what do you call a guy who's playing crap VINYL records on a club?

He runs a label, I'm pretty sure he knows what he's talking about. And he doesn't say it's impossible to profit from vinyl, he just says it's more difficult too. To be honest, it doesn't surprise me that he said that. Richie Hawtin has always been on top of the latest technology and adopts it very quickly.

High-five!

Anyway the discussion going on in this thread happens every hour in the world.
Basicly, Vinyl, CDJ's and Laptop-DJ'ing both have their own pro's and con's, it's up to you picking what you most like and supporting it.

Making endless discussions about it isn't going to change it. A discussion like this wont transform a die-hard vinyl fan into a CDJ user or vice versa.
Just use whatever the fuck you want and support it.

Sight wrote: If you are not a dildo, get on stage and play a good mp3 then you did it.

Note I said if a dildo gets on stage and plays a CRAP mp3. Why don't you re-read what I said and take it for face value ?

Notice i didnt say this " Anyone who plays any kind of mp3 is a dildo "

I said " If a dildo gets on stage and plays a CRAP mp3 "

If you are smart enough to see the difference and you know me, you will know what I am saying.

When people like ritchie hawtin come out saying things like don't release vinyl its going to get a react like me saying "dildos should get on stage and play CRAP mp3s.

Kromestar and Benny page ARE NOT DILDOs. you dolt. Thet don't play CRAP MP3s.

I'm seeing DJs downloading music illegally, playing on stage and activly trading it amongst eachother and ripping people off, making the entire thing flush with temporary zeros and ones.

If you make it as an artist/ DJ whatever and you hold your own on stage playing MP3s, CDs or a damn harmonica then Good job !

Granted I misunderstood what you meant but only in that the rest of the post had seemed so riled up that the comment of "crap mp3" came off, to me at least, as meaning mp3s are crap as oppose to the quality being crap because some dildo has illegally downloaded/ripped it from the internet.

Why don't you tell me your favorite Ritchie Hawtin song ? I dont think so. I can't recall ever playing nor having heard any of his music ever played at any party, event or club. So sue me. I'm just tellin it how I see it.
Plastikman - FUK
Plastikman - Kriket

Do you know who he is? He isn't a Dubstep DJ, I dunno if you've made that assumption? You might not have done, either way he's a techno DJ and I've heard plenty of his tracks played all over but I guess if you don't like techno then you wouldn't have known that so that's fair enough.
You are telling me he's <<<< me ? that's fuckin stupid. You're a bright one aint yah.
I didn't understand that?

Hes wrong about vinyl not being profitable. Maybe he just sucks at making profitable vinyl.
I work in a record shop also and know that vinyl sales definitely ain't what they used to be where as mp3 sales are up by god knows how much (not aimed solely at this genre.) I personally think more profit can be made utilizing that format and obviously so does he, but what he doesn't know (I'm assuming) is anything about Dubstep, where I'm sure vinyl is probably doin better than mp3 releases in terms of sales.

I wasn't trying to be a prick to you, more the attitude you seemed to have in that initial post, and the response to me for that matter.

Entitled to your own opinion though mate
