thoughts on "Skream!"
Re: thoughts on "Skream!"
tripple post/mega edit/bite my tongue
i was incredibly dissapointed with this album. not even sure if i'll buy it. but all of his other releases are awesome. his turnover rate is amazing and he's allowed to make tunes not everyone likes
i didn't like how a lot of the songs use the same sounds and samples, but it might have been his plan to have sounds that bound all the tracks together to form an "album" and not a collection of singles.

it's funny, on first listening to it i was like 'there's not a huge amount of point to this cd for me personally - i've been dancing to my favourite tunes on here for months anyway: this album is for newbies and to get skream some much deserved p's (fair enough!).'
and then i was listening to it on my crappy ipod headphones on a train one time, and because they don't allow for any bass at ALL, i had this thought:

and kinda enjoyed it on that level. don't get me wrong, ninja tune are almost evilly pointless imo, the exact opposite of what i like about music, but i can see 'skream!' having a place in my record collection as a making-sunday-lunch-in-my-kitchen kinda record.ozols man wrote:more like something from a ninja tune catalogue..
Was a bit suprised about the tone of the album. Was expecting more of the Skreamizm flavour (can't wait for Skreamizm 3).
But this is clearly Skream's attempt to crossover and hit a totally different crowd - a couple of vocal tracks, a skippy homage to the old school, his biggest track to date MidRL. the album has clearly been programmed in this way to bring a bit of variety and diversity. Can you imagine a fresh pair of ears listening to 11 tracks of bollock breaking dubstep...? They might be a little put off...pussies!
I think there is enuff in their for the die hards - Stagger, Rutten, Colourful, Dutch Flowerz - all able to smash a bass bin or two.
Tortured Soul is one of myt favs. Feckin next level cinematic shizzle.
Onwards and upwards i say!

Must admit I was a little disappointed. Find myself skipping quite a few tracks on the CD version (Auto Dub? Kut-Off? Hardly essential tracks). But how nice is it to finally have Stagger, Blue Eyez, Dubbers Anonymous, etc. on the vinyl? Definitely enough on there to make it standard purchase. Plus, who really cares when Skreamizm Vol. 3 will be out in a few months and the boy keeps making a track a day.

wtf? are those credentials supposed to be some sort of recommendation? he plays with jamiroquai?RANDOM TRIO wrote:I think you'll find that summer dreams trumpet was played live by 1 of the fellas from jamiroquai. Thats big in itself.
Its hard to be able to make a whole album with tunes to please every 1. personally i think the album is sik.
any 1 ever brought an album and loved every track??
must be a different version of summer dreams to the one i've heard too, cos that wasn't a real trumpet.

anway, back on topic i think there's a fair bit of weight behind the ''we're feeling a bit disappointed'' thing and with good reason. wasn't the monumental event i thought it'd be, and this weight of expectation is after all only created by the standard of skream's past releases/unreleased dubs.
could've been a better album in my opinion, but given the rate at which skream assembles quality tunes i don't think there's any cause for alarm. skreamizm 3, a new label, southside dubstars release etc etc plenty to look forward to still.
do think of 'skream!' as a bit of a missed opportunity nontheless.

the live flute on rottan vip ( i think thats the one! ) sounds really good to me.
i think Skream is right to be a little more accessible with this one though. if you want to get more people into dubstep why batter them round the head with a CD full of heads-down serious riddims, you're best off blending the two extremes together and showing people what a wide variety of moods and styles the music is capable of. dont ya fink?

if this album is trying to get people into dubstep, it's being seriously misrepresented i think. same with the burial and kode9 lps. the latter 2 are amazing pieces of music, but it doesn't really represent dubstep as a whole. if you're going to give someone watered down versions of dubstep, how do you think they'll respond when they start hearing stuff along the lines of loefah and vex'd? i figure it he was really trying something to bring outsiders in he should have accurately shown what dubstep was about. i think the skreamizms would be perfect to give to newcomers, straight forward dancefloor dubstep that has laid back and agressive attitudes.Batfink wrote:i think Skream is right to be a little more accessible with this one though. if you want to get more people into dubstep why batter them round the head with a CD full of heads-down serious riddims, you're best off blending the two extremes together and showing people what a wide variety of moods and styles the music is capable of. dont ya fink?
again not knocking skream at all, just don't think the album is his best work.
