I suck...

Post by xparameterx » Sat Jul 25, 2009 3:07 am

Yes, I can make your basic wobble, I know my way around the DAW, I've tried loads of processing, and I've read the bible's. Yet still, my bass line sound flat and trite. I've tried Albino, Massive, Alchemy and loads of other synths, so at this point, I'm assuming the problem is me. Sorry to waste your time, this is just a woe-is-me pity thread-rant that I had to get out....as I wonder to myself *ducks and covers* how does one achieve the Reso, Datsik style basslines? Fuck me running :D

Try putting different waveforms on each other in albino - putting two -2 octave sine waves and some square waves and shit.

play and record 20 seconds or so of intense fuckery on the synth w/FX and then chop it up and trigger it with a midi controller

try to start doing something else, if you start by thinking: I will make a bassline, it will probably suck.

For instance me and my friend were producing, I was messing with FM synthesis, trying to make a pad, didnt just get what I wanted... hit a lower key just to try it out(some sounds can sound a lot different and really cool on a different note) and after doing that, I looked at my friend, smiled, while he did the same, and we said in unison: "Bass."

Is your problem the actual bass sound, or the bass melody?

sometimes, the best bass sounds aint basses.. as for a melodies, if you cant play keys just learn some notations, it'll help.. either that or just dont make beats.

My problem is the actual bass sound. I can think of melodies and lead lines no problem. Maybe like people have said, I need to stop trying to fit some bass mold and instead, just start tweaking away and see what happens. Fucking writers block

use presets.... the purists will get up in arms, oh well, fuck em... a good sounding preset will get you much further, quicker and better sounding than a bad sounding original patch. There's absolutely no shame in using a preset for a sound you can't create yet. The finished piece is what's important.

over time, you'll figure out how the patches work and will be able to create your own. There's no need in holding back your growth in songwriting and actually finishing songs because you can't create a 'banging bass patch' (or any other sound for that matter)

too many people get caught up in 'engineering and programming' and forget they are trying to make MUSIC

Its not that hard to make a sub, surely? What other bassline do you need, instead of making silly wub wub sounds, use the space for some more interesting sounds and weird melody lines
