bit surprised no-one has mentioned urei. their mixers are very nice, great sound quality, nice simple layoutl, clear led level lights. last for ages as well. not as expensive as pioneer, a+h or rane.... you could easily pick up a good condition second hand one for less than 200.

don't waste your money on any other than these^ brands. one of these will do for a very long time, especially if you aren't a scratch dj, whereas many others are likely to break and wear out after a few years of heavy use....

Yuck!

Pioneer mixers are pretty terrible considering the sheer quality offered by the competition.

Oooh... flashing lights!
Yeah okay...but most redlining DJs don't seem to realise what those lights represent and how unnecessarily over powerful the gain stages are on Pioneer mixers. Eventually meaning that unless your very gentle with them and actually understand what those little gain knobs are potentially doing to the sound engineer's thousands worth of amps, lms, outboard and drivers then some pissed &/ coked up DJ Big Potato could well just piss on everyone's bonfire.

There's far too much gain without any onboard safety lockout system/anti retard gain set up (like Ecler, Rane, A&H), unless you plan on voiding your warrenty with a soldering iron, or investing a few hundred sheets on outboard limiting that won't destroy your amps.

Oh and regarding 'industry standard, most clubs have it', I salute the Pioneer sales division for marketing such crap so well, and well done for taking the bait yourself.
THANKS!
best breakdown of pioneer mixers in a long time!

No-one have mentioned the RANE EMPATH!
RANEs best sounding mixer these days!
Had mine for a year now, and it still haven't disapointed.
Been using all kinds of mixers since the nineties, but now i bring my Empath to every possible place,
and it makes the sound cleaner on all systems i'v tried it on.
You should all check it out next time you need something new!
I think it sounds better than all the A&H mixers i'v heard/played on.
And every knob and fader has a good feel to it!
My mate has an empath, its sick, sound quality is amazing and the EQ's are so presice, you can really play with them and get them just how you want.

My vote still goes for A&H though, simply because of the 4 band EQ. That is the best tool you can have, better than any effect in my opinion.

so many suggestions... and its great to hear what everyones opinions are... i think im just going to have to roll down to a couple of shops and give them all a whirl...

I use serato... So i guess the rane could be very handy... but I like allen and heaths as well.. and i would really like having more than 2 channels... preferably 4...

That said... I am constantly switching between serato and vinyl... so I think i just have to choose which one fits me best... :D :D :D

If your after a highend mixer it's gotta be a Allen and Heath or a DJM 800 if you can afford it.

I've got more mixers than I can remember in the garage at my mums from Kam, Vestax, Numark and Gemini, to an old Realistic mixer that my uncle used to run his soundsystem through.
In the mixing kitchen atm I got a Pioneer DJM 800 and a A+H that got put on the subs bench when I bought the 800, the analog filters on the A+H do piss on the 800's digital filters, but overtall I have more fun and look forward to mixing on 800's more if it's only 2 decks and don't have a preference between the A+H and 800 when using 3 decks.

I've used near enough every professional mixer out on the market, personally i'm not feeling the Ranes and I hate it when I turn up to a club and they've got a Urei.

Pioneer DJM 800's don't sound as bad as people like to make out, if you redline any mixer it's gonna sound shit.

The 800 is becoming the industry standard over the A+H's, recently more Pioneers have been installed at clubs over the A+H's, im basing that on the gigs I've done over the last 2 years and the fact that my good mate Chris who runs http://www.westenddj.co.uk told me recently that the 800's are out selling the A+H's with a ratio of 3 to 1 even though the 800's are now considerably more expensive.

see...

both of these mixers are in my studio (A&H and the Rane)

we have tested both, head to head, and the allen & heath sounds better when pushing the levels in the red

no question

most headliners prefer the rane because it's more familiar to them (more like the pioneer 800

Cool, but why the f*ck would you ever even be pushing into the red in a live application?

I understand in a test situation it's nice to see what's what, but out in the field it's far easier to build up a healthy rapor with the sound tech over a bottle of beer or ... and get him to turn the amps up rather than super heat the signal you're banging through them.

pioneers sound like ass well before you get them in the red, for the money they are charging for those toys, they should at least have a proper sound, and they fall short. Plus, the damn effects are horrible, and that's all you're really paying for...

They've sat back and let their name and the bells & whistles sell their gear for the past decade and it's finally caught up with them in a severe way. They are so far behind in the quality department, they probably won't ever catch up.

@OP,
Urei are good mixers, but the layout is just gash IMO.. that said, if you don't mind the layout, they are a good bang for the buck

because in the real world...

it happens a lot

and the less distortion that is generated, the lower the chance of overdriving the soundsystem

I'm not saying I dj like this, but people (even pro's) do

if you use serato already then you def need to play on a TTM57.
you can control all of serato without touching comp keyboard, very easy to use and functions totally customisable, instant doubles, autoloop :)

the FX arent as hands on as pioneers and only 2 a time, but depends how much you use fx.

big plus point is fact the software is constantly being upgraded with new features and all in one box means it really cuts down on wires and setup time....

Quite simply the 800 doesn't sound like ass, the 500/600 weren't the greatest sounding admittedly so I was never intrested and was one of A+H biggest fans for years until Pioneer picked up the sound quality on the 1000 and 800.

quite simply, for the price you pay, it is well below par, and the "effects" are a joke... you can buy cheap guitar pedals that have better sounding effects

pioneer DJM 600 is more than fine for home use if you cant afford the 800

Image

the crossfaders no good if you like cutting and scratching even though theres 3 settings - sharp / medium / slow gradient on it

as for going in the red, theres nothing wrong with the levels flicking into it momentarily , its when there running in the red constantly or theres no movement in the level meter as its just cranked red to the top !!!1!

seen tooooo many dj's crank it in the red and the dancefloor is a pianfull place to be

dont do it :)
