In the style of 2004's incredible 2cd re-issue of the Pavement classic `Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain', Matador and Domino have finally seen fit to issue one of Pavement's most disputed albums, 1994's `Wowee Zowee' with a wealth of bonus material. Again making up 2 jam packed discs, along with the original 18 track album we have 31 bonus tracks... that's a lot of Pavement and did I say it was great stuff too? Well I've always been a vocal supporter of Wowee Zowee, with tracks like `Rattled by the Rush', `At&T' and `Fight this Generation' nestling well in-between short punky skits such as `Flux = Rad' and `Serpentine Pad' it makes for a devilishly obtuse listening experience and is far more angular than Pavement ever managed before or would manage later. Some fans reckon this is their best ever moment and some of course think it's their most glaring mis-step, but if anything this box-set just shows how it has improved with time. As more and more bands look to experimental rock to show them the way and assimilate their sound into the pop rock oeuvre, `Wowee Zowee' makes progressively more sense. Notably Blur re-packaged Pavement for the disillusioned late 90s with their `Wowee Zowee' sound-alike anthem `Song 2' and their self titled album, but still Pavement don't get the credit they truly deserve. Maybe now, packaged with a rather lovely book of `art' and a few albums worth of bonus material people will re-assess the album and maybe the band themselves, but it probably won't happen - more's the pity. Instead we have the young folk all buying My Chemical Romance teeshirts and video promos and singing to the stars in disillusionment when really all they need is a bit of abstraction from our indie lord Stephen Malkmus. I don't think I really need to say any more about this album, you're going to buy it simply because it's unmissably good, with the bonus tracks merely showing how much the band had going for them - they rarely put a foot wrong. ...

Never really got into Pavement, but quite liked some of that early-mid 90's lo-fi sound - Grifters, Eric's Trip, Truman's Water, etc, but I think the one that I'm still into from that period is Royal Trux (probably the thinnest band ever). That ragged-bluesy-barely holding it together style is one of my faves. Twin Infinitives is pretty unlistenable (45 second pauses between hitting record and starting playing), but the untitled album, Cats and Dogs, and Thank You all have moments of god-like genius on them.

Junkie Nurse is one of my favourite tunes of all time, all done in one of those rambling, not quite 12 bar blues (may have been very wasted, but loads of old blues tunes had vague structures and extra bars added)

although after the dismal success of Steve Malkmus and the Jicks, i wouldnt be suprised.

i saw him w/ the jicks, and someone threw a handmade carrot rope at the drummer. steve forgot one of their songs, it was a total joke. everyone there wanted to see pavement

i remember liking a couple of pavement tracks when Steve Lamacq used to do the evening session, never really followed it up though.

Pavement were pretty slick (eh, totally wrong choice of adjective!). Shady Lane, Range Life, In the mouth a desert, version of Here -I think- from some Peel show. Great tracks.

I love Pavement. I got sent the Wowee Zowee redux but must confess I haven't listened to it yet.

Are they really reforming? SM and the Jicks were truly awful, I agree.

imo one of the greatest groups ever
the way they cud carry melodies across instruments was amazing
i wud LOVE for them to reform!!

i hear what people are saying about Stephen Malkus and The Jinks and i agree, but u need to check out the group Spiral Stairs (the other guitarist and ocassional vocalist) started after Pavement split, they are called Preston School of Industry, imo top quality!

as for some of the other groups mentioned in this thread:
Royal Trux - I liked Twin Infinitives LOADS, for me there best. I never really got into the whole bluesey side of them.

Trumans Water - quality! quality! quality! they got better an better with every album, Milktrain to Paydirt being one of my favs.
i never really followed the Grifters but saw em live @ Noise Fest in the early Nineties and they torn it up.
Erics Trip were big but again i never really followed em like i followed Pavement, Trumans Water or Sebadoh/Lou Barlow

I really loved the series Lou Barlow dun called Sentridoh (home recordings released on homespun copied tapes) as well as a lot of the Sebadoh stuff. Which in turn lead me into The Folk Implosion (the most accessible of there stuff is prob the Kids Soundtrack)

Also anyone wanting more Pavement type stuff,i cant get enuff

check out Gary Youngs album (the original Pavement Drummer) and also look out for Silver Jews albums featuring Pavement musicians

I've only got there first album. Really good though. I heard he was nearly killed by a bunch of wankers who dicided to beat the poor guy up

Oh yeah. Pavement are reforming for a one off gig next year. Tickets got.

Edit... Just been looking for info on the reformation of Pavement and can't find any. My mates certain they are though and he say's he getting tickets....

Me too please I'd love to see them live. if however this is all myth, the slow century DVD has two of the final gigs, plus some vintage stuff.
