there is a difference between bassy goodness that doesnt drown out the mids etc and bassy dullness that overwhelms without being pleasant.

Your right though it does have a lot to do with the mastering process but often thats to do with the people that cut the plate

Ok, here's an interesting one for you.

I've just had about 40 plates, so we're talking a good 60 tunes robbed from my car (last weekend at Glade along with a UDJ bag). Well over £300 worth of music. A lot of limited press (skull disco & import) stuff which the likelyhood of getting on vinyl again is pretty low (unless I want to pay well above the odds through discogs or something)

Would it be unethical of me to try and recover some of these tunes illegally? e.g. recording vinyl from mates, illegal d/l's etc?

I've never illegally downloaded before, always paying for my music, usually on vinyl.

I can't make my mind up! I mean, I have already paid for them...

Just wondering what the DSF massive are saying?

I buy predominantly vinyl, although I have bought some MP3's that I can't find on wax yet. And I also used up an ITunes Gift card once, but I don't really like to buy from them. 14tracks.com has some nice ones that I pick up here and there. Other than that I get free downloads and mixes when artists are generous enough to give me a copy. No illegal downloads here!

I'm proberly a bad person 'cos I download a hell of alot of stuff from rapidshare since I heard its less risky :( But I do have a reason, I'm a student lol money is tight and I just cannot get the music I really want to listen to its sad really!! I have brought legal downloads and I have a little vinyl collection going on (say about 30 records none Dubstep though mostly The Specials and stuff like that, I do plan to get some Dubstep when I get my loan) I feel guilty as hell doing it cos alot of the artist I rip of proberly really need my money, but I swear soon I'm gonna give all that money back!! Plus my dad buys stuff I listen to on CD like 5 every week so makes me feel a little better

When I just started mixing I tried to find any dubstep I could, I stumbled upon a lot of older DMZ and Deep Medi rips. But now that I have a job Ive just been buying stuff, digital tunes, juno, beatport sometimes. But in the future I plan on advancing from a controller to decks and a mixer, once that happens ill probably by tunes on wax as well

In the eyes of the law he is, mp3 is a different format to vinyl, therefore a different "product".

Yeah technically but I wouldn't feel bad for myself for doing that personally but keep in mind you are probably seeding these tunes as you are downloading them, if you are you are distributing illegal files.

The only stuff i download illegally is the copies of the vinyls i have already as i think it's stupid to have the vinyl but not be able to have it on my iPod or whatever.

But now i can record songs from my vinyl's to my computer so am doing that now instead.

I buy vinyl but then I illegally download my vinyl collection from the internet,

is that still illegal?

Would ripping my vinyl collection to mp3 be illegal?

if so then why would downloading the same things off the internet be wrong?
Technically it's illegal I suppose (if you want to be pedantic about it, it's a different format), but I certainly don't have a problem with that kind of thing.
On this.. I like the Soul Motive method of including a 320 download link with the vinyl.

Just voted for all legal downloads.. mostly buy from Beatport & Boomkat.. sometimes Juno Download.

Nice topic Paulie.. PS> When is the new Mount Kimbie out on digital?

I buy the vinyl and then download it illegally for my ipod/ easy access to listening. If there isn't an illegal vinyl rip or if there is but it's bad quality then I have bought the digital download as well (mostly to get hold of a flac version).

Some tunes I just buy the flac / 320 outright if I don't really want the vinyl. If it's a vinyl I know isn't really what I'm into but want to give it a listen anyway I'll download it illegally. Then I might buy the vinyl as a result (which has happened a fair bit) or never really listen to it again. More of a preview thing for me to be honest.
