the preset card on a dx7 or the tx81z is probably the best way to understand the breadth of what FM can do for you. modules on modules on modules, affecting (and effecting) each other.
i use FM for the really gnarly, non-wobbly sounds--- in that case, i do generally mult out to sub/bass/mids/etc.
also works great for midrange material in general, glassy tones, pads, and choppy percussive stuff. those of you who have my tune 'skank ethics' on the 2nd low motion release-- the edge of the sub is a layered FMsynth in logic.
but seriously if you can get yr hands on a dx7, check it out!

true that, thats what i use for everything from drum sounds to bass to leads to keysrekall wrote:just whip open operator in ableton and have fun.
it's the same principles and a whole shit ton easier to use.
edit: make that a fuck ton.
mainly because you can change the routing to a standard subtractive deal or in serial ABCD or AB, CD etc etc
also i believe Rob Papens Blue has FM routing,
