You'd have to hire him, just for him having the balls alone

Surely better to hire a smuggler that
didn't get caught?

Hahahahahahahaahahahahahaha
what a badman. You have to admire him really, probably the culmination of many futile attempts to gain employment via other means.

He's obviously given this a lot of thought, realised that there's no point pretending that he hasn't just spent a decade in prison and decided, reasonably enough, that he's got to use his criminal career as demonstration of his skills and competence. I don't think he is wrong and cannot think of a better approach. I just hope it works for him and he ends up with a job that's OK for him.
