wellll it turned to metalcore before turning to all this screamo/hardcore shit. You know what I mean

intro
breakdown
breakdown 2
synth interlude
chorus (with clean singing)
breakdown 3
breakdown 4
end

except each new band that does the hardcore screaming with the clean singing chorus gets progressively worse at it, music sounds boring which makes somebody who has slept and breathed metal for the last 5 years ditch the scene completely and find that there's much better music in the electronic scene + you don't need a band of dickheads to make music with you.

Try Wintersun. One of my favourites at the moment. Finnish metal at its finest.

Amen to that.

What happened to metal? Simple........

Korn turned into fat old wankers who couldnt write a decent song if they tried.

Linkin park came along and flooded the market with sub standard posh boy manufactured wank (oohhh but dont forget they had a "rapper" and a "Dj" in their ranks CHECK EM OUT)

RATM, Korn,Lost Prophets,Limp Bizkit,Workhorse movement, Hed(pe), Deftones, Marilyn Manson,Avenged Sevenfold all produced one, or at the most two, decent album(s) and then turned to shit.

And dont even get me started on emo  (My chemical romance???? Fall out fucking boy?? WHY???? JUST WHY?????)

So in short the popularity went up and the quality went down down down.

Metal is dead. It died peacefully in its sleep in 2001. RIP.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's dead, but so much shit came out, and so many formerly good bands went to shit, that it sucked the joy out of any decent new stuff I heard. Even new bands that came out who were good could only manage one album before doing just the most sellable aspects of their first stuff. I used to be a total metaller, but I haven't listened to any metal (except some early deftones for nostalgia) in about 3 years. I just couldn't enjoy it any more.
Feedback wanted.

Metal albums have been lacking bass for ages now. It actually started in the mid '80s (plenty of '80s thrash metal records lack any punch and are mostly mids.. up to the second wave of black metal from Norway, to late '90s death metal....). It also sucks that most of the bass drums in the more mainstream'ish metal bands sound like mouse clicks. That are likely triggered, bah.

This started all way before 'Death Magnetic'. That album is more of a culmination of everything wrong with metal production for the past 10 to 15 years.

However, there is absolutely nothing wrong with metal these days musically. Yeah, Cannibal Corpse is a band that stopped being relevant years ago.... are you going to judge 'modern rock music' on the basis of The Rolling Stones performing poorly on stage?

Metal's actually way more creative than it was before for these past 10 years. It's getting more spaced out and atmospheric and heavier. Unafraid to delve into noise, musique concrete, freejazz, industrial, shoegaze, post-rock, dub and so forth. Death metal's kinda lacking in THAT department compared to some other genres, but it's still alright.

- Wolves in the Throne Room
- Sunn0)))
- Municipal Waste
- Drudkh
- Jesu
- Agalloch
- Pig Destroyer
- Kayo Dot
- Amesoeurs
- Cynic
- The Red Chord

Nothing wrong with metal songwriting, riffs, creativity or whatever, really. Musicianship is tighter than before. Black metal's more out there than ever...

They broke up several years ago. Saw them live before, really fucking good performance. Gene Hoglan does several session things now (meh, he's past his prime -- Dark Angel's 'Time Does Not Heal') and Townsend has a new project, forgot what it's called.

I agree with the majority of this, except for the 'Metal is Dead' part.

These guys are by far keeping metal alive and ticking, they maybe pretty tech at times but fuck me they're good...

Listen to white walls, probably the best outro of any song ever.

Erm, ok what would you describe them as then?

Not black/death/doom metal perhaps but anyone who says Korn arent a metal band is unfourtunately showing some of the same ill founded bias that helped tear the scene apart in the first place.

I got sick of people who were into black/doom/thrash/death metal hating on each other and everyone else who wasnt into the same thing as them. It got soooo fucking boring in the end. Which is why so many people have dropped it like and turned to genres like dubstep that dont have all that segregation and hatred toward different styles within the same genre.

What happened to metal? The fucking fans happened. Tore apart their own scene from the inside. Hope they are happy......

Peace

Uhhh, Korn is a funk rock band with downtuned guitars. I like pretty much all metal music, Korn just.. isn't.. it? I don't care what is metal and what isn't. They're just.. not. Does it really matter? Yeah, no metal head thinks Korn is metal, that's the end of metal. Except some of the best metal has been released in this decade so..
