Nah, nothing in the '80s was even close to brutality to stuff like this
Death metal didn't even become truly brutal 'til around the turn of the decade when Death released '
Human', Napalm Death started going death metal and the New York brutal dm scene started shaping up. Thrash metal was fast, but I felt like it wasn't that brutal compared to the brutal dm of the mid '90s.
I don't even listen to most '80s metal for its 'brutality', but because it's good stuff in general. Dark Angel, Kreator, Coroner, Candlemass, Watchtower, Blasphemy, Bathory, Hellhammer, Pestilence, Sarcofago...

Slayer too
fuck anything that happened in the 90's
the 80's were much harder
even the new slayer which was sick suffered from the loudness wars
metal needs peeps like rick rubin back into it
Rick Rubin produced 'Death Magnetic', which was even panned by the metal scene for the mastering and mixing, that's coming from a scene that's gotten used to overly compressed and loud albums. Then again, I don't think there's such a thing as a 'metal head who is a Metallica fan' anymore.

Really? I always thought it sounded sorta thin. Bass drums sound clicky and the vocals don't sit well in the mix...
My favorite tune in dm, production/mixing was is '
Cold Hate, Warm Blood' by Cryptopsy. Bass drums are fat but defined. Lots of focus on the rhythm section without drowning out the leads.
And Flo Mounier is the greatest death metal drummer I've ever heard. Too bad the band sucks as of 2008.

Yeah, but the technical dm I appreciate, I appreciated because the music was just damn good.
Most technical dm bands these days are just.. kinda lame I'd say. A lot of them are kinda standard -- by no means all, though. Gorguts set the bar high with
Obscura, which was insanely technical, but most of all, just fucking ridiculous in the best of ways. The riffs, the drum patterns, the dynamics, the vocals.. hell, the way the bassist played his bass like a percussive instrument. I haven't listened to that shit in ages.

I saw Psycroptic open for Cephalic Carnage several months ago. Put up a good show, though I'm not a big fan.
Cephalic Carnage was amazing.

The latter I'm afraid, check out
this label. Max from Spazz runs the label. They put out some shit by a band a friend of mine is in called
XBRAINIAX. Amazing band.
And put out shit by a grind band that will no doubt go into history called
Insect WarfareThough they broke up last year....
My favorite punk label.
There's lots of good shit around.. Check out the shit on a comp called
Trapped In A Scene, which is an essential comp as far as modern north American punk goes.

I grew up listening to metal and in my adolescence was in many death and black metal bands (Among them one was "Nuns in a Blender". lol! You can probably find the music somewhere out there). The first time I heard "In the Nightside Eclipse" by Emperor it blew my mind!
I actually love the lo-fi sound of many Death/Black Metal records. Some top favorites
In the Nightside Eclipse - Emperor
Transilvanian Hunger - Darkthrone (I was addicted to the sound of this record for years. Definitely too lo-fi for most)
Effigy of the Forgotten - Suffocation (Killer percussion, I learned to play drums listening to this NYDM classic)
Sigh - Imaginary Sonicscape (Came out in 99 and was a breath of innovative fresh air)
Samael - Ceremony of Opposites (Everything is so rhythmically TIGHT on this record. Downtempo and absolutely massive sounding!)
IMO metal stopped being really innovative and interesting after 96, at least as far as death/black metal are concerned. These days it seems the focus of innovation has moved more towards the experimental hardcore and grindcore scene, while bands like Nile/Amon Amarth/Suffocation just keep doing what they've been doing for decades.

That's my favorite punk band. ;0 Didn't know they did something new, heard their guitarist was very ill, though.
And yeah, I've heard some Evicted stuff in the past and I cracked up when I read that their singer works with pills in a hospital, holy crap. Elephant in a porcelain store.

Black metal became more 'out there' since Filsofem was released.
Check out
Wrath of the Weak. Specifically the tune 'Always in Anger'. A very rewarding experience. Gorgeous, simple melodies, extreme focus on repetition and LOUD and noisy as fuck.
And yes, 'Effigy Of the Forgotten' is amaaazing.

Listening to WotW now. I like it, you definitely were able to assess my aural palate for metal pretty quickly, lol.
It's been 5 years since I lost my Filosofem T Shirt and I still get pissed about that! I was going to mention that record but didn't want to crap an entire laundry list of my favorite metal all over DSF

In The Nightside Eclipse is a great album, in my opinion Emperor's best. Same with Transyilvanian Hunger, I loved the old Darkthrone stuff, but then they went more 'Crust Punk' which i could only listen to when i was angry lol.
There's something about the lo-fi sound, it just doesnt sound right being black metal without it, a lot of people can complain that it's awful quality and shit production but its how a lot of it was meant to sound, I think it adds a lot of atmosphere and a darker sound.
My favourite production on a Black metal album though is on Mayhem's 'De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas' i love the sound of Hellhammer's drums in it, especially the toms.

These "bands" are definitely
not Emo. True emo was around from the late 80's and was considered a variant of punk. Bands like Fugazi, pg.99, Cap 'n Jazz, American Football etc. are real Emo, not that pop shite.
It's sad that most people are fooled into thinking this, considering a good portion of Emo bands were incredibly good. Ah well.
And true metal died a long time ago.
