Will this work? Vinyl Scratch Alternative.
I have been wondering if can set up a mp3 vinyl control with my -
My Laptop
Nio 2/4 - two 1/4 in and 2 stereo out or 4 mono out
1210s
mixer
and all i need is the time coded vinyl and software. Would i be right in assuming that this will work?
The software i am thinking of using is
http://www.mixxx.org
I know won't be able to play actual records in this set up.
Here is some info i have gathered,
"Internal workings
The internal workings of Final Scratch are quite simple to understand. Multiple open source software libraries have been created to decode the Final Scratch time code. The information here comes from those libraries.
A basic Final Scratch setup consists of five pieces of equipment.
1. A computer running a compatible software, usually Native Instrument's Traktor
2. The ScratchAmp
3. Two turntables or two CD decks made for DJing
4. Two time coded vinyl records or time coded CDs
5. An audio DJ mixer.
[edit] ScratchAmp
The ScratchAmp is a firewire (FS 2, FS Open) or USB (FS 1) audio device. It has two phono/line stereo level inputs to read the timecode from the record or the CD, and two line level stereo outputs to feed into the audio DJ mixer line channels. It also has two phono stereo outputs for pass-through of the actual phono audio signal. This is useful for DJs who wish to play both digital audio tracks AND traditional vinyl; allowing them to switch between the two sources without disconnecting or re-connecting audio jacks in the middle of a DJ set.
The ScratchAmp does not store any audio on its own, it is simply a purpose built external Soundcard. It communicates with a PC—usually a laptop—over the firewire or USB connection. The laptop uses Final Scratch compatible software (typically Traktor DJ Studio) to interpret the timecode signal from the supplied special vinyl/CD, then play back a digital audio file based on that signal, allowing traditional DJ vinyl control of MP3, WAV and Apple AAC audio files. The Laptop software then sends audio data back, over the same firewire/USB connection to the scratch amp, which then sends an audio signal out through the line level output, for playing through a DJ Mixer or Amp."
Sounds like I can set it up for about the price of 2 time coded vinyls. So if anyone has actually tried this or similar please get in touch.
Cheers

You will only be able to use one turntable. Some software allows you only use one, not sure about that software in particular. Then you need the time code vinyl. A lot of the 3rd party software I have seen allows you to use pretty much any brand that is out there. Since you can only use one deck you could probably just go to Guitar Center and grab either Serato or Torq vinyl and try it out.

I have not seen this software before, looks sweet. I am going to try it out myself. It is just like Torq in that it displays the wav forms stacked, once you use it you will see why this is the best way to do it. But this software doesn't have as much of the shite in between the wav forms and file list, therefore more of the tunes in the list are visible. Let's see how stable it is

You said it had 2 quarter inch ins, that is one stereo pair. You need 2 stereo pairs. If you do and I am reading that wrong then you should be golden like a shower.iamadam wrote:Thanks for the reply, could you please explain why i could only use one deck. It seems to me that i can get 2 line ins therefore two time codes. What am i missing here? Don't mention the 500 quid.
I am not going to use the software tho, I loaded it up and didn't like about 5 things right off the bat before I even loaded a track in. For free I guess you can't complain.
Deckadance has a nice interface imo, maybe look into that.
cant 1/4" be stereo as well though? cause 3.5mm canabZ wrote:

and i agree on deckadance, really nice interface and supports a wide variety of timecodes!
Two stereo pairs eh...
Well In reply too, "can 1/4 jack be stereo" yes defos and i have one of those. It also can function as a mic input. The other input i have is a XLR input that can also be set to line in function thus making the phantom power redundant so me fingers won't get burned.
If the signal output from the time coded vinyl is 1s & 0s then i'm not to sure what is the point in a stereo output of this information would be. I be thinking this because I know i can get a lead from the decks to the Nio's Xlr input. The Nio also has it own pre amps to boost the input signal.
So that's a long way of saying yes I can get 2 signals into the nio and route them from there. that where the 2 of the 2/4 comes in. The 4 being monos out or two stereo.
Just found this place,
http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/conne ... rca-2.html
With a one of these I think i would be sorted
http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/AD003.html
The whole stereo 1s & 0s is strange tho. Is just because decks usually have phono (RCA) outputs. The only thing i can think of that might be problem is that 1s are on the right and 0s on the left but if that is the case that's crazy chat and i give up.
Thoughts.
Thanks for the info on Mixxx I've not had a shot of it yet and i'll try that one you suggested.

It isn't going to work boss. I looked up your box, it is just 2 in, 4 out as the name of it would suggest. Same as the AK1 I have. You need two stereo ins and 2 stereo outs if you want to use 2 decks, that is just the way it is. Like I said maybe there is software that allows you to use 1 deck. With Serato and Traktor Scratch you can do that. Not sure about the 3rd party software, you would have to look into it. Your only other option is to get a new sound card. Or get Torq or something. Sorry to ruin your dayiamadam wrote:Two stereo pairs eh...
