Brussels

Safe crewdem,

I've gotta spend a few days in Brussels with work next weekend and I'd like to check check check out what's going down.

Has anybody been recently? What's there to do? Or is it just all chocolates, beer and chips?

I've only been to the train station on my way to a festival... there's definitely beer and chips in there.

My ex and I found out that Belgian cops don't appear to mind that much if you stand outside the station trying to finish as much of your festival herb-stash as you can before getting on the Eurostar....

Do they have 'coffee shops' in Belgium or was I being lied to?

I think you were being lied to. They're very softly softly on it and probably won't bother you much for smoking, but it's still illegal.

I'm passing through there for a couple days in Antwerp next month. Wonder whether I'll have time to have a quick wander between trains and Eurostar.

No coffe shops. But you can carry 3 grams max. with you without being prosecuted but they still have the right to take it from you.
But if you're smart you wont get any trouble.

Yeah lots of bars, shops, people, whatever you want. Looking for some events and stuff?

Hi Trotsky, what's the purpose of your visit, just a citytrip or?
Well i highly advice to take the train to Ghent and go to the city center for a day of culture, the whole center is practically older than 400 years old, with lot's of nice cafés & bars. Also in a restaurant order the mussels with fries or "Stoofvlees" (meatstew) which are really delicious (and ofcourse wafels, chocolate or pancakes). If you smoke i would advice to buy some cigarettes over here, they are "way" cheaper than in the U.K. Also check "manneke pis" en "de marollen" (les marolles), a cosy quartier where you still can find the reall brussels way of life . But i personally don't like brussels all too much it's quikly becoming a pure french & immigrant city with lots of poverty en crime (try to avoid Anderlecht or Schaarbeek, lots of criminality).
if you need any more info just ask. ;)

EDIT: a list of Belgian beers I advice you to try in Brussels
- Lambik (locally brewed)
- Duvel
- Brugse Zot
- Orval
- Lachouffe (dwarf beer)
- Leffe
- Hoegaarden

-try to avoid the regular beers in bars like Stella, Jupiler, Maes, Primus,...
only take the best during your short time ;)

Cheers for this.

I'm going for a few days with work to do some lobbying in the EU so I've got evenings free (mostly on my own :( ) to get pissed-up and generally dick around.

Anyway, as you say I'm sure I'll hate Brussels because I hate immigrants and the French. Bloody frog-eating, job-stealing scum.

Avoid the Garre Du Nord area, rough as fook. Only thing missing when i was there was a body outlined in chalk. Thought the city was a bit of a let down.

Brussels was a beautiful city ten years ago. Now it's only the center that still is nice.

I've only been to the center, but thought it was boring as fuck. They did have a great bar there though, with well over 1000 brands of beer. Pretty nifty for checking out obscure Mexican Staring-Frog beer from Southern Sri-Lanka.

Yeah that's the Delirium Café, they have more than 2000 beers there now.

enjoy your stay in Brussels :)

If you need Mary J just follow the smell in Bruxells, lot's of Hash there as well.... No coffeeshops in Belgium though, you got to go to the Netherlands (our northern neighbours) for that.

Like previous mentioned, check out the delirium cafe & try some of Belgian finest beers 8)
