From what I know it's pretty hard to get booked if you just use a laptop to mix tunes.. Unless your throwing your own parties, most promoters out here rather book and support djs that use turntables/cdjs. When I spin dnb I spin vinyl, but I bought serato for dubstep just because the majority of the tunes I mix aren't available on vinyl. I have nothing against people that just use laptops, but I am really supportive of the turntable culture and really don't want to see it die out.

If I remember rightly the most important aspect of a dj is the selection of the tunes.

I would rather hear a really good list of tunes played one after another than bad choices of songs beatmatched horribly together.

edit: @op man you seemed to take offense by my post, there was a fair whack of sarcasm in there. I fully support people's decision to buy software as opposed to buying the cracked version which could have all sorts of crap in it.

I'm assuming the other guy who laughed at buying software also had this same attitude, if not then he's just being a dick for not much of a reason.

Vinyl isn't for everyone, as you say it's expensive and is currently makign me a broke man (still gotta love it though) going for a cheap laptop / software option seems pretty cool for now, might be good to invest in an interface or something down the line to help you out.

but my brother is an ipod dj

he has great taste in music and can share wonderful music to people to who wouldn't have heard of it without his help

Then again where does the line blur, if you are an Ableton DJ all you need do is Crossfade..

I had a winamp plugin that would crossfade...

Computers are just different man, automated monotony and whatnot.

I'm all for both styles, to me its wierd that people get hands on with CD's!

Serato looks good but if you haven't got the feel of vinyl at all then why bother?

Why not just get a good hardware DJ interface?

I know that playing tunes with a Mac and iTunes isn't technically DJing, but how else should have I of phrased what I did? I had people dancing, I only got told once to change the song, and I really enjoyed myself. I think I chose a good selection of songs and, like most people are saying, that's the most important thing.

the good ableton djs arent "just crossfading"

they are snagging loops, resampling, making drum parts to ease transitions, borderline live remixing

trying making a loop in sync to a song with a mpc and loop pedal....yea good luck

yea ableton you gotta spend a few hrs preshow setting points just to do basic mix wise

thats one way to do it, but you can have a track in your set with all of your songs that you might use already warped so you can improvise

yea im talking about warping unless 4 to the floor most dnb and dubstep you have to hand adjust
