American Dubstep!

can't really say much on the american dubstep scene... i don't really listen to much of it so i'll avoid saying anything uninformed about the scene. i'm canadian and as a producer living in montreal (which does seem to have a fairly active, loyal scene) i don't have any contacts with other producers or dj's in the city, even the country. canadian dubstep seems to lean toward the heavy and hard sound, which i'm not as interested in as, say, uk funky or new garagey tunes or weirdo stuff like brackles, and that sort of music hasn't really crossed the atlantic very much yet from what i see. so i guess that leaves me sitting here alone in my underpants, getting stoned and making tunes that nobody else hears

just on sunday we ran into Moldy, Kuma (he gets a pass... if he wants ), Monkeytek, Gaslamp Killer, the Muti crew, DJ G, Noah D and a host of other folks... and that's just the artists. Tons of behind-the-scenes folks as well who are quickly becoming the glue that holds this together for the continent. North American dubstep is alive, well (REALLY well. my god, really, really well) and pushing boundaries as always.

for anyone that doesn't know. bassnectar is pro. really pro. he's been doing the san francisco dubstep scene for a while now and he's largely to thank for shaking up the dstep scene here on the westcoast.

before i saw rusko benga or anyone else perform in america, i saw bassnectar first and he's been around for a little while now. good shit.

i pretty clearly remember a statement from bassnectar maybe 3 years ago saying he wasn't into dubstep, and although he took some influence from it, he didn't take it seriously

I've forced Svpreme Fiend to start making dubstep and future garage like.. exactly one year ago. So I'll take responsibility for starting like.. 0.001% of the yankstep scene.

He said the majority of it was "too dark" referencing only the style that skream, benga, tunnidge, etc. were producing a few years ago. He was pretty disrespectful about it as well. I read the rant a few months ago.

He also screwed Benga out of performing at DEMF.
