It was a bit of a conflict of interests - the maze want to have people putting on nights which aren't at a loud level - and we want to go out and hear dubstep at a reasonable volume. So it was a bit of a shame - the night would have gone on longer if the sound had been kept at a level the venue were happy with.
I personally would have been happy to have had more music.
People forget that if you are in a venue - you have to show the venue some respect or they will pull the plug.
You may not agree with them but ultimately it's their call.
I have never had any trouble from the staff there and I rate it as one of the most chilled out places to go out to in Nottingham. I have seen a lot worse instances with security in Nottingham, believe me.

Was a good night as far as I can remember, truth be told I was far too messy even before I got there, apologies to anyone I ranted at or spilled a drink over. Liked the decor inside, felt much more like a real night if you know what I mean- sound was also wicked. From what I can remember Benga and N-Type smashed it, N-Type especially I remember doing some good mixes.
Was shit it ending so early and all that, seems to happen with a lot of smaller nights I've been to in Notts that the venue ends up giving the promoters conflict (or vice versa lol), it's a shame really.
Big up Geiom each and every, and to everyone pushing dubstep in Notts. Watch out for Skream at Detonate on the 24th (this Friday) and Vex'd live at Futureproof (at Blueprint) on Thursday 30th

Ive praised the night already in the events thread and N-Type summed it up perfectly last night.
Who was that MC in the white suit? he was bad.Sounded like his voice was pressed on the tunes.Genius.

It was resident MC Terrible "What time is it?" Shock of "Feel so bad" fame.
Apparently he was on his way to an All White Dance, hence the shiny suit complete with matching winkle pickers! Sick.
Big up to Geiom for holdin it down in the face of adversity, Benga and N-type for a wicked set, the visuals crew and the mentalist crowd. It was a proper heavy night.
This night has officially outgrown its venue. Anyone got any suggestions for an alternative?

Im not sure which venue. All the best places have shut down or changed audience.Maze is wicked but if the volume has to be kept down then so be it.I would love to see Dubstep at the Garvey but not sure if it could be filled in Notts. However if Leeds can do it then so can we.Would obviously be pricey due to hire and cost of extra DJ's.Dont like Stealth. The rescue rooms would be alright.Really stumped Notts needs some better venues.i-line wrote:It was resident MC Terrible "What time is it?" I think the Garvey is a bit too big for a dubstep night, would be heavy if it was full up but really it would have to attract people from other places for that to happen- would have to be a serious line-up. However, can imagine DSF + Garvey + Dubstep being wicked if it was actually busy.
Reckon it'd be more like 20 people in a gigantic hall lol

Right then, its been awhile since iv posted on this forum but as this is a subject pretty close top home i thought i best fill everyone in.
Thanks to everyone for the massive support, and massive massive props to geiom for holding the whole thing down and doing all the work himself (myself not being present - gutted).
First off i can almost understand why the venue felt the need to bring in hired muscle, as we have a long standing problem of going over our time. Nothing silly but at least 30 mins every time since we started doing events there.
Very up for it punters coupled with MCs who do a wicked job of both toasting and crowd hyping means we always find it hard to not have "just one more". It got to the point where at the event prior to Benga/N-type the actually CUT THE POWER TO THE BUILDING to get us to stop. (Benny ill is a sick as fuck dj btw)
But while i can see were the may be coming from in hiring security i dont agree with the implementation of this security.
Previously we have only ever had one situation that could have become trouble, but even then me and geiom were the only people present to moderate, so bringing in security for event only and so to obviously not increase the safety and enjoyement of the punters but to police them at the end of the night is severly not cool.
Equally the issues had over the sound levels at the events grew to the point where i had Ben (the venue owner) strong arm me into a corridor to shout at me and threaten me (and the whole night) with being chucked out if it wasnt sorted out.
While i dont agree with bens method of communication, i understand that the maze is at the residential end of mansfield road, and if the number of complaints focused at the venue during one of our events reachs pitch we could end up costing them their music liscense, which obviously would be crippling to them as a business.
We fully understand the gravity of this.
Now heres where i start to disagree.
When we first approached the maze with the idea of us putting on the heavyweight rocksteady events there we were very very clear on what exaclty these events and us gnerally as a collective where about.
At the time we didnt know whether or not a vanilla-dubstep event would go across well enough in the midlands to have ay kind of lengeivty.
Dubstep previously had always been tagged on to the back of dnb or breaks events.
So basically we were looking for an open minded venue that was willing to take on the risk, had good vibes and good atmosphere, and wasnt gonna get scared off by the 6k rig we were gonna pile in.
More than that, the entire ethos behind these events was presenting the music we loved in an enviroment we felt befitted in, and that meant not comprimising on the sound.
Obviously we never intended to go over the top in a venue the size of the maze, but to my mind one of the defining things about dubstep is its extreme sub. To me its part of the deep atmospherics of the music.
At every stage we made it perfectly clear what was going to be happening in terms of sound level, and in return we were happy to make any concessions nesscary to maintain a good working relationship with the maze.
Yes we could have put less bass bins in, yes we could have eq'd out the 32hz sub, and yes any promoter has to be interested in keeping the venue happy if they are serious about putting on events proffesionally.
But in all honesty, the maze knew exactly what our night was going to be like and exaclty what we going o be doing in terms the sound system.
For me, to start off being brilliantly supportive (and they were so credit where credits due) and then to turn round and say that we are acting out of order, chuck threats about, hiring in muscle without even notifying us that door staff were going to be present, cutting the power to the fucking building rather than sit down with us and work towards a solid middle ground for both our concerns is lame.
Me and ben even discussed at one point sitting down with our engineer and trying to figure out a suitable comprimise, which much to my frustration never materialised. Just to put this further into context me and ben did indeed have some very civilised conversations over the spill of noise from the venue into the surrounding residential area at previous events, but at that time we were still running the events mid-week NOT on a saturday as we are now.
Despite being able to fully appreciate the maze's point of view on this matter, both me geiom agree that to detract from the quality of sound at any one of our events is a comprimise we are not prepared to make.
Every headline act we have put on has commented on the quality of the sound, as have the punters that come back again and again.
It is what, to me, makes dubstep, and our events, stand out.
This is an area we take very seriously.
Sorry again for this essay length rant, but i felt that as promoters we owed a more fully realised explanation to the many people that have been supporting us from the first in what we have been trying to do, and after everything else are what has kept this night going.
Dont expect a heavyweight rocksteady event to take place at the maze in future, although while this all gets resolved i urge everyone to get themselves down to Futureproof @ blueprint for the almighty Vex'd (check events listings for full details).
We will keep everyone up to date when another venue has been secured, and thanks again to everyone for their continued support.
Alex.

Big up Alex, agree fully about the sound- obviously the music is the most important thing but if you haven't got the right sound system you can't fully appreciate the music. Look forward to the next heavyweight rocksteady, wherever it happens to take place.
Futureproof have definitely got the sound sorted for their night, last time the system was proper so I assume it will be this time. Detonate also sorted the sound out for Loefah last time.
