I can see criticisms on myspace and a lot of it does annoy me, but it does help out a lot... It gives you contact with other great musicians.. And the personal messaging is very handy. My band which is releasing an album about May-ish met the artist doing our album artwork via myspace. So its all good. They oughta do something about the horrid design though

that stream of consciousness wasn't directed at you. i'm just increasingly bewildered by the ever-expanding number of 'artists' who use a promotional product that they think sucks.

seems contradictory that's all. it's almost like saying that promotion and popularity is worth more than employing aesthetics values that reflect you as an artist.

but as i say, each to their own innit.

aesthetic values? people don't go on myspace making morality judgements, and many people that have the biggest gripes about it are massive elitists with this "i'm above myspace" kind of talk. bottom line is, you want your music heard by as many people as possible.

i've noticed a bit of a landslide lately with artists shutting down their websites, not bothering to update them, or shelving plans to build them in the first place, because they're all relying on myspace totally for their promotion and web presence. yes, you could argue that time is better spent making music than building a website, and you could also argue that more people get to hear your music if it's on myspace than sitting on a web page somewhere. but i think the presentation of someone's 'art' is important.

it may make the promotional presence easier for artists - here in brazil i know a fair few budding producers for whom it's the only way they could have an online presence - but i wouldn't go so far as saying i'm a massive elitist because i dislike something that looks and feels disgusting, or any of the other reasons i mentioned in my first post.

anyway, as i say, each to their own.
