this is the issue though, cos while obviously its an awful state of affairs that people have to work such depressing jobs, in a short-term, pragmatic sense its not, because the previous alternative was probably the dole, so for people with kids to feed...
but obviously other forms of regeneration are preferable
mos dan wrote:if it's mackems vs geordies, then where to middlesborough (or durham) people feature in this?
middlesborough is actually a long way away, theres a bit of football rivalry, but not much more as far as im aware. and durham is kind of detached too... if anything it falls broadly within 'mackem-land' (lol) cos its just a bit south of sunderland. but its really very small (relatively) too

no i agree absolutely, i should have said deffo. apart from anything else my parental heritage is brummie and yorkshire so i'm not exactly ldn going back generations or anything (few ppl are really). and shonky's points about the house prices spread spot on too - brighton's getting silly like that innit.
'the sticks' - yeah, slightly tongue-in-cheek i'd like to think, not a serious description!

lol yeh i know, obviously! problem is that so much of the london-centric crack is, but it'll still serve to further alienate anyone with a hint of an inferiority complex

slightly off-topic, but an interesting thing i was told by a lecturer one time was that one of the reasons for the development of broad differences between west and east london was that during / after the industrial revolution, the prevalent wind direction was west to east, and as industry was located in central, those who could afford to choose would choose west for the air with less pollution...
seems suprising, but possible...

Thats spot on. Peter Ackroyd states this some where. I was going to add that the reason for the rivelry may have something to do with class. North being generaly richer then the south (back in the day and arguably, still). Don't know but, it could be a contributing facter. Just plain old snobery.

cheers for all the knowledge. i guess it's just vibes and talk in the end.
the nearest thing we have in america to this london thing is city related sports rivalries (some of which go back 80years) and the biggie-tupac drama. biggie - tupac wasn't so much coastal (new york vs los angeles) drama as it was gang related (bloods vs crips) and fueled by the media/hype driven exploitation of hip hop so that the two record companies could benefit off it. the end result being we lost two legends.

anyway i'm always up for repping this side of the river. probably stems partly from working at the south london press (
apart from the south london press , the other local paper we got was 'The Mercury' which covered greenwich/charlton/woolwich/ etc... what a great name for a grime newspaper!! The Mercury!! are you stupid!! i never understood why no south MCs ever used this in a bar..
lol i know!! the mercury's actually the slp's sister paper, i used to write for them too (film column, 'arts &leisure' pieces). so if you ever read about any crap deptford-based theatre groups around three years ago, that was prob me
i make paper like the mercury, and merk you like the, um, papery - this is one of the many reasons why i'm not an mc lol
oi what u talking about.. they're DEEP lyrics!!
"my name's benjybars, ain't you herad of me / when i was 9 i got my picture in The Mercury" ... brap!

the north south divide is harmless fun, a bit like the north south divide in the whole of england. There are differences in the areas, but maybe they're only really obvious to Londoners?
the differences stem from all kinds of factors- Mostly the river yeah but also the built/physical environment (Dan's point about South London being younger is true- it was built upon quite late in relation to East which was one of the first places for industry, cos of the docks.
) and also the migrants we've had over the centuries. For example, Italian's, German's and Russians were settled in the East, Jamaican's in the South.
In the 40's, Britain advertised for workers in Jamaica; when they came over on The Windrush ship (the name of the square opposite Mass in Brixton) most of them were housed in Clapham and Brixton, hence the large West Indian community in South London.
Admittedly I don't know much about North London.. Blackdown?
I do agree that the North-South thing probably has something to do with cabbies as well- the old ' don't go south of the river' phrase is famous amongst londoners. The first ever Black Taxi was from Hackney and I think the Taxi trade mostly operated from around that area (maybe still does?).
As for West London- it;s the Royal area- palaces, parks, museum's ...
