Post by osky » Tue Sep 01, 2009 8:10 pm

basically i wanna get some decks, got some bullshit usb ones at the moment. many dubstep djs use vinyl, but does it really matter if a dubstep dj uses cd decks?
also what dubstep djs use cd decks?

CD makes more long term sense. the only (irrelevant) issue is that the elitists will come at you sideways.

Ableton Live + APC40.

Decks are sooooo last millenium!!!!

If you insist on old skool djing methods, i'd go for a timecoded vinyl option.

If that is still too expensive, CD decks... ;)

if DJing goes down the laptop+controller route 100% i think i might have to start killing DJs.

who says when it does it will still be "djing"

competition breeds great stuff. ie M.C's in early hiphop. it started out just repping the dj on stage...then competition meant they had to be impressive at doing so
if everyone started laptopping it then the guy who is doing live looping and remixing stands out as the better one and makes the other guys look like jokes

but vinyl dj's will always have a place

either or and serato down to what you feel more comfortable with, but high end cd decks like ones in clubs are gonna cost an assload more than some secondhand techs which are also club standard

I know there's probably treads on the whole vinyl vs. digital thing but can you hear the difference in a club? Or is the whole vinyl vs. digital thing only erally noticeable at home chilling with headphones? That something a DJ would need to take into account?
Feedback wanted.

go and listen to most pa systems or speakers and compare to what you see in clubs
people who bitch 90% of the time are wannabe audiophile nerds especially with 256kb/320kb mp3s

I've been using serato for a while now, I'd recommend it over cdj's anyday....

I guess its up to personal preference and budget though right? [edit] but I would definitely steer clear of cheap cdjs...

i have vinyl decks, and i got serato. if you think about it, in the long run it will actually save you money, rather than buying a shit load of vinyl.

yes, it will take a long time to get your money back i.e. serato costs roughly £400 (much cheaper on ebay :D) and thats about 60-70 vinyls @ about £6 each.
But as soon as i installed it, i had my 20gig's worth of itunes on 'vinyl' so it was definetely worth it in my opinion. also you can download mp3's costing a few quid, instead of paying £6/7 for the vinyl

i still ocassionally get the odd vinyl if its a rare one or an absolute banger.

my mate has CDJ's and in my opinion it takes the fun out of DJing (i'm probably gonna get slated for saying that). with vinyl its way more hands on and engaging, even cueing up a song requires manual input, where as on a CDJ you just press the cue button.

bit of a cliche, but ultimately its personal preference.
in my opinion, serato for the win!

VINYL. sounds better, more releases, better to mix plus you will constantly use 1210s or 1200s when you play out instead of a whole gang of different swag cdj knock offs by numark that dont work. p.s. i would personally avoid serato, i spent my money on this only to find out how long it is to plug that shit in in the dark, bumping into another sweaty dj and holding everything up. good for home though. just my 2 pence
