Vinyl release vs CD release vs Digital release vs all
Vinyl release vs CD release vs Digital release vs all
Since there seems to be a lot of conversation regarding vinyl i thought i might as well add to the discussion. I'm trying to get together a small EP to release and was thinking about going through Transition Studios for the mastering. They've got decent prices so i figured why not. But upon further review i've hit a wall... I can't decided whether to just do a single release (2 tracks on a vinyl) or a cd ( 5 track EP) or just straight up digital release (5 or more tracks EP).
But it seems that doing a digital release doesnt really garner that much attention or respect. its weird like for example that thread with the guy and belgium magazine says he only reviews vinyl but i honestly think my roommate is the only person on this planet that buys vinyl. i seriously swear Planet-Mu only survives because of him, lol...j/k
Anyway, whats your opinion on doing a vinyl release as opposed to cd/digital, besides sound quality (even though that is highly debatable)..
Oh and any reviews or opinions on Transition Studios would be appreciated.

Vinyl, for the pure physicality of it - anyone with a paypal account can release an mp3. And digi so your not leaving anyone out.. and tbh as a vinyl buyer I don't know or care whats is and what isn't released on MP3Sight wrote:Digi and vinyl. Vinyl is good because you never know where that mp3 will be in 10 years, but you'll know where your records are. Mp3s are also good because they are fast, cheap and easy.

depends really.. dubstep is still to a certain extent a local scene.. the people that hear the tunes are most likely going to be going to the gigs of the producers that are doing the tunes.. so therefore local.. unless the producer's a huge name.
sorry if that's not very clear... bt my point is it depends on what most people in your locality uses.. if it's digi go with digi...
i know lots of people that are strictly vinyl heads... myself included...
also to push vinyl it's far easier if the artists have already got a certain following.. otherwise i'd again go with digi.. you're less likely to go absolutely broke..
wudn't bother with cd unless you're going for a 10-11 track lp
the question that comes to my head is why would it just be 1 12"?
what that says to me is that tunes which you're thinking about putting in a digi release aren't good enough to make a vinyl release.. if this is the case you need to think about are the tunes good enough for a release full stop....

First off thanks to all of you for your amazing insight. Great posts and opinions by all. Huge props.
I mean i can also send you clips of the tracks if you want to judge for yourself. I really havent had many opinions so tbh it would be nice to get some critisicm to gauge where i stand as far as quality.
If you want to hear some of my stuff here is the thread promoting two tracks i released on BeatsDigital earlier this year.

Well the reason i just thought about one is cost. I figured its more expensive to press a multiple track vinyl than it is a cd. I personally think all the tracks are great but the cost of releasing a 5 track vinyl EP seems that much more than a 5 track cd or digi-release. Hell id love to release all these tracks on vinyl but i guess im traumitized still from the first time i tried to press a record. it was a complete disaster. I pressed a drum and bass record and when i received the vinyl they all came warped and when i got distro i had to do another pressing and fork over another 500 bucks so they can get good copies. I was young it was my first time and inexperience with no consultation really played a factor in that which is why ever since ive been releasing only digitally but it hasnt gotten me anywhere as far as exposure.oski wrote:

And as far as that ive been trying but its a mission in itself just to get one of these labels to open up your email. Hence why i went off and started PMCRW Recordings. I figured well if no one is going to give me the time of day i might as well do it myself. But the problem is I also do comics and i just dont have the time to manage both right now. I would love some label to pick up the tunes but just getting peeps to listen is a mission.laurent__duval wrote:why dont you approach some labels. they can do all the leg work for you and foot the bill if it goes tits up.
