Live dubstep?

Post by B_90 » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:40 pm

Ez i've tried searching this and not found an appropriate thread. Basically im not a very good Dj. But i rigged my laptop and my keyboard earlier and played my tunes aswell as other ppl accompanied by my keyboard. I've also got a cutoff, Res and bassboost knob on my keyboard and got some decent sounds. Do Nights book this sort of thing?

i been wanting to start a live dubstep act with my buddy Mesa and a few others, i'm a drummer and i've been in a few bands but since i been into dubstep i've been wanting to do something that straddles the middleground between a rave and a gig

basically i want to start a dubstep-metal band but i think that might be a bit TOO niche

this is a great idea if done well, look at jazzsteppa, they have live instruments and a proper drummer. Makes for a decent show.

Lots of breakcore acts do this too and there's a fair old crossover in booking... if done well, it's a great way of performing, Gotta keep the drums sampled/electronic though....

Making dance music "live" by putting a live drummer in the mix is a great way to sell your music to the coffee table crowd, but not a great way to move the dancefloor... you've either got to strip down and go "stadium" like Pendulum, or take the grit out and go "lounge" like Reprazent. Fail bothways.... I love electronic music... keep it electronic!

Have you seen/heard Aaron Spectre's Drumcorps project? It's not Dubstep (it's breakcore mainly, I suppose), but lots of metal influences in there... he chops up people like Converge, Pig Destroyer etc and has been known to get freaky with his guitar on stage, too.

Check out Grist - even if it's not quite your thing, it might give you a few ideas!

jazzsteppa is far from lounge and amazing to see live.

Heartbreak, a London italo outfit, also perform with a live drummer sometimes, it's immense and 100% danceable.

Zombie Zombie too, but they bathe him in a lot of electronics. Amazing sound for two people, though.

I'm not saying it's impossible, but it *is* difficult... a lot of people seem to assume that adding " (live)" to their stage name instantly makes the show better.
