i have 2 technics and a crappy cd-j. but i like it. vinyl is expensive, yes. but i like it. its really all about preference. i have the cd-j just in case something in digital & isnt on vinyl, or its a friends tune, etc.

really it just boils down to whatever you want to do.

basically i wanna get some decks, got some bullshit usb ones at the moment. many dubstep djs use vinyl, but does it really matter if a dubstep dj uses cd decks?
also what dubstep djs use cd decks?

anyway safe!
to me, i dont see the point of spinning vinyl in this day and ages if you want to dj... makes more sense if you are doing it as an at-home hobby. would make more sense to just get traktor or ableton, IMO.

i sold my sl12k's back in 2005 in lieu of ableton live and have not regretted the move once (albeit i love adding effects, sampling and live pa)

i suppose if you are using decks or cddjs in conjunction with a laptop running some sort of dj'ing software, it might be cool... otherwise, you are limiting your abilities and wasting money to boot.

Feels nicer mixing with vinyl but playing cd's works out a lot cheaper, your choice at the end of the day

i managed to bag a Serato Scratch Live 1 for just under £300 on ebay, perfect condiditon, and it came with red vinyls aswell instead of the usual black.

for the turntables, it depends what you want. DO NOT get belt driven ones, they are shiiiieeeeet! Direct drive all the way. Myself, i bought some cheapish turntables, i love them but slightly regret it- the torque on them are absolutley gash. only had them a few months and thinking of upgrading already. my suggestion is to go to the top, and get Technics 1210's or 1200's. yes, they will leave you with a massive hole in your pocket, but these badboys last for years

my mate managed to wangle a 1210 mk5 for just under £100 off ebay and another 1210 mk2 for bout £150. jus gotta be lucky, be a bit cheeky and ask the seller if they would sell it cheaper!

one important thing he taught me is: buy your shit second hand! when you buy it second hand, the price depreciates very little. whereas if you bought it new, selling it on would lose you a lot of money. probs not worth gettin second hand headphones tho, due to hygene n all that

hope that helps

make sure it has a minimum of 1GB RAM and the largest hardrive possible. Otherwise, just get the highest spec you can afford.

that was my problem :( i got a PC and only do home mixing, but if i start playing out i guess i fucked. lol

when i do, im gonna borrow my mates laptop and put all my music on an external harddrive. i suppose i could get a new laptop, but it costs too much and you need it to be pretty decent to run serato.

I use Technics 1200s only, I love em and always have, also it's nice to buy a vinyl. It's pricey but you can hold it, they smell good, and have artwork. Alot better than a nasty little mp3.

Although on the flip side, you'll get given mp3 dubs that you wont be able to drop. So buy a CD deck/Serato for them.

Problem solved :)
