unusual instruments

Post by allisfullof » Sat Sep 05, 2009 12:53 am

anyone here using anything unusual for their productions? i have some circuit bent keyboards and toys that i've made over the years and lately i've become interested in other non standard instrumentation -- gameboys and other video game consoles, joysticks to control midi, theremins and other various homemade shit, etc etc

please discuss!

I sampled some glasses filled with water recently. They make some wierd noises, especially hen the water is moving.

Try it at home kids! :)

Fill a bowl with water then tap the edge with a metal spoon. If you wobble the water then tap it, it makes a funky sound 8)

I've used gameboy with nanoloop before, lots of fun. I also use a few homebuilt/modified stuff with my modular synth. Check out my sequencer!

I'm current making a wobble from the sound of Samus dying in Metroid Prime.

My high point - I recorded an ant running around on a condenser mic diaphragm . Did not produce the sound I thought it would. Ants legs are FAST.
haha word sorta brings to mind the electronic duo Matmos -- was just listening to their album 'a chance to cut is a chance to cure' made entirely from the sounds of plastic surgery. neat stuff

I have a NanoLoop

I use it for drum sounds and I am about to create multi-samples of the synths next.

I sample everything.. From tapping on the table to cans filled with rice for shakers. I had some old bamboosticks laying around, taped them together and started jamming with a spoon

I also have some real old keyboards wich are dying and make nice sounds (finally) hahaha

I use a monome 64 to control midi.. This thing is wicked combined with artillery 2 from sugar-bytes.. 64 effects on a controller smaller than a trigger finger... How can you beat that?
