Comprised of MC’s Kush, K~Swift, King Kolby and Germz, FIRST CITY put New York City on the map in terms of grime. In 2007, they made their debut on BBC’s 1XTRA and brought the state-side grime movement to listeners in the UK. In the summer of 2008, FIRST CITY released their first mixtape KINGS OF NEW YORK, which showcased the group’s diverse range of lyrical styles and featured contributions from a wide range of producers and mc’s from both sides of the Atlantic. The past year has seen the group become an ever-present fixture of the NYC underground, hip-hop and dubstep scenes performing at Love, The Knitting Factory, The Pyramid, Europa, Diety, Southpaw and numerous other venues.
On stage and in the studio FIRST CITY continues to resist easy classification. This latest release is no different, adding the group’s firebrand lyrics to the freshly minted dubstep, grime and bassline rhythms of producers 6Blocc, Soroka and DJ Dore. 6Blocc lays it down hard as f*ck once again, with his masterfully ruthless take on “Envy”, sure to tear up any club. “Rebels” is an epic retake of a well-known track from the Kings of New York Mixtape that firmly states First City’s renegade stance. This grimey version features Code Of Arms’ Soroka on the buttons as well as the UK lyricist Germz. With lyrics reminiscent of Mobb Deep’s sophomore album - as the name suggests - “Infamous” is a diabolical banger of a remix by Soroka featuring an exclusive verse by K-Swift. MC Kush brings it solo on “Groupies”, lacing the bouncing 808 ’s and catchy synthline of Dore & Soroka’s “Future Shark” (COAD008) with a brilliant melodic vocal rant. First City’s “Koneisha” is a smut-laden innuendo-fest complete with suggestive samples and well matched by Dore’s thumping 4X4 bassline track. On “Life We Live” produced by Nato, FIRST CITY once again creates a truly gangster sound that is both classic and innovative. Welcome to the evolution of rap music.
