Deleting VSTs from FL Studio - couple of questions

Post by wub » Wed Sep 02, 2009 10:22 am

There are a few VSTs in my FL that I've either never used, or otherwise added at some point and got no use out of whatsoever.

As I'm sticking with learning a few of the larger VSTs inside out before moving onto anything else, was thinking of removing these obsolete (for now) instruments.

Is it just a case of removing the .DLL files (for VSTs that don't have an uninstall option in their file folder)?

And can you remove the bespoke .DLL files that come with FL without it majorly fucking up when you try and load it?

Don't know about the Fruity native plugins, but maybe just try moving them to a different folder where they won't be detected and see if FL runs ok. I'm guessing it would based on my experiences with other programs, but I don't know FL at all. Personally I wouldn't fuck with them, but I can't see the harm in moving them and, if FL doesn't work right, just moving them back to where they were.

In terms of other plugins where there's no uninstall option and they don't appear in the Add/Remove Programs list, yeah, you can just delete or move them as you like and you'll be fine.

I've never tried this...however when I reformatted my 'puter last time, I copied all the .dll files onto an external hard drive...wiped my computer....then reinstalled Fruity and chucked all the .dll's back into the right folder - it seems to still work

I don't think it'll make that much difference to be fair, not like they're massive file sizes or out...

Just copy em into another folder, see if it still works, if not stick em back :-)

Good luck!

don't delete them eniterly, just remove them from you favourites list, that way they are still there if you do ever want them, but they wont give you any hassle until then...

You can move/delete the .dll files and folders however you like without doing any damage. Just make FL scan the plugins folder next time you load it up. I'd recommend moving them to a different folder instead of deleting though.

I keep getting a couple of weird error messages when I was rescanning FL after installing new VSTs

Namely one telling me that FL was already open?
