It really depends on your budget, I'd personally go for a pc. You mentioned that you are just getting started with production, in that case Reason 4 would be a good choise, as it has everything you need, but cant use vst's. If you want vst support you could get fruity, its relatively cheap and gives other daws run for they money. I would also invest some decent monitors and soundcard, but you could do without these till you learn the basics of production. My two cents...

EZ bro, welcome to DSF and the world of music production!
Unless you want to use Logic, PCs are both cheaper and have more software available for them.
Most big name software is available for both platforms (except for the aformentioned Logic), so don't think that Macs are 'better' for shit like audio recording and graphics etc. Software like Cubase, Pro Tools, Reason, Ableton Live and Adobe Creative Suite are identical on both platforms. Macs use Intel hardware inside, so they practically are PCs anyway.
PCs are very stable these days. My PC hasn't crashed for longer than I can remember and it is already 3 years old. It's also a fallacy that Macs don't crash, because they do.
PCs have loooads of free software that simply isn't available for Mac. Yes there are VST converters/wrappers, but not all plugins like being 'converted' (work). Bootcamp is a long winded way of wishing you had a PC anyways, so why not cut the chase and get a PC?
Unless you're planning on spending a lot of time in Mac based studios, you'll have better file compatibility amongst friends etc when you want to take your projects between computers.
Don't be a muppet, get a better speced PC for the same money and thank yourself every time you see a new PC only plugin...

As for programs, why not download this (PC only) free music software package. ---> http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight= It contains a recording studio plus synths, samplers and FX. It is enough to get you started and won't set you back a penny!

virtual intruments like synths, samplers, drummachines etc. U cant go wrong with fruity, get some freeware vsts, some are very decent for freeware. I'd personally go with reason, it has all u need and i like the workflow of it + plus u learn a bunch bout conecting hardware cuz of its interface. Try go get demos from some daws en see what u like the most and get that. It's your choise really....RMarney wrote:What are the basic programmes i will need then and what are VSTI?

Buy an up to date virus checker, keep windows firewall switched on and up to date, and avoid cracked software.T40 wrote:I just know i'll end up with some virus out of nowhere if i get a windows laptop even if i dont go on pr0n!
Even with some serious torrenting and naughty stuff online, I've been virus free for months. If you insist on cracks/pr0n, then find yourself some trusted sources and avoid the fake stuff!
Also, you should be using Firefox, Chrome or Opera for surfing online. Internet Explorer is crap at everything ever. (Fact).

Macs are must better for working with media.
First priority in processing goes to audio, that means the whole screen could be lagging and fucking up, but everything will be playing back. Why do you think all the professionals and big boys use them?

Imo this is a very misguided statement.Jameshk wrote:Macs are must better for working with media.

ASIO drivers bypass the windows threading structure and allow software to communicate directly with the sound card. If you're serious about music production you'll be running an ASIO compatible soundcard.
Like I said in a previous post, all the major software is identical on both platforms. (Adobe Creative Suite, Corel Painter, Cinema 4D and all products by Stienberg, Digidesign, Propellerhead, Waves etc)
Platform specific software includes Logic (Mac), Final Cut (Mac), FL Studio (PC), Sonar (PC), 3DSMax (PC), Maya (PC).
Buy a Mac by all means, but you'll feel like a tit the next time you see some awesome PC only freeware haha!
