I found Mad World quite a good but not steep learning curve.

also if you plan on writing tunes and not just reading notes..

learn some scales and improvise over a chord progression

and improvise

and improvise...

even if it sounds like shit

never know - they could be those who live by the theory "Know the rules before you break them"

So, playing songs you can work out how people structure notes ;)

right i know that

but from experience in learning several instruments, trumpet, guitar, keys all the classical training goes right out the window when you write a song. it gets reduced to chords, scales, modes, and when to play what, and which scales to play over which chord and what emotions are evoked with certain changes in scales. that kind of stuff is hard to learn from sight reading alone

obviously note reading helps loads, but it shouldn't be the only focus

ye faw shaw, i used to play piano when i was a kid but just learnt to sight read and do classical grades (no improve and could only read the scales but not learn them!), picked up the bass guitar and guitar when i was 14 had no training whatsoever and i find i can be much more expressive and individual on guitar. ( and picked up scales by ear)

Horses for courses really like the man says don't focus on one thing

http://tabnabber.com/documents/chordDia ... Chords.asp taught myself how to play keys and some basic music theory using this site. once you learn a few scales in different keys, all the other scales will start to make more since. i sat down and memorized the blues scale from a to g sharp. im sure some of you guys will find it very usefull especially when remixing and tuning samples.
