ugh, this thread gives me a headache.

wonky or not, one of the reasons these terms are created is so that when you talk about that type of music, the person you are talking to already has an idea what style of music to expect.

That being said, the term WONKY isn't very helpful considering I've heard everything from zomby to hud mo, to samiyam to joker considered wonky.

futuristic hip hop will do.

but at this point there's no use complaining about the name wonky....it's too late.

All debates to one side for a moment: can anyone recommend decent forums/sites to download mixes for this type of sound, whatever it may be called??

Cheers

I get my Wonky fix from Boomkat and Lucky Me and grabbing whatever mixes come out by producers I like. The Low End Theory podcast is good too. Although trawling through Myspace top friends trumps all. Never came across a decent forum.

RE: Wonky
I like saying Wonky because it's shorter than: "You know that whole disparate surge of L.A. based (and Scotland actually) instrumental Dilla inspired kinda psychedelic and broken sounding hip-hop. Like Flying Lotus! Or Rustie. Sort of. You know Flying Lotus? He's on Warp. No? Ok. Listen to this anyway, it's good, you'll like it."

I grudgingly vote in favour of Wonky until something better comes along, (although I hate it because I used to love that word for describing music before it was used for THIS). Communication is worth putting up with stupid distasteful words.

yeah it's definitely better than wonky.

I think a lot of what these cats are doing surpasses dilla's music. at l;east the ones that build on his sound as supposed to making near identical (but still good as it stands) beats

i personally like the term wonky....there i said it. lots of genres have dumb names, wonky isnt one of them. its certainly fitting, however childish it is. quite better than IDM but i still use that one.

oh, fo sho...and if Dilla was alive what he would be doing would be surpassing Dilla music, heard? I would take the words "post-Dilla" as a fuck of a compliment if it were said about my music(tho i'm more like post Sun Ra, lol)...anyway..."post-dilla" would only include dope beats anyway, right?

and as i've said...my girl was referring to nappy hair as 'wonky' before we knew dubstep or glitchhop existed. So when i see the genre 'wonky' it just means out of whack & kinda ugly, at least to me...but really who gives a fuck what its called. listen & learn :)

if he was alive I dunno what he'd be making. I'm sitting here wondering how many of these "post-dilla producers" would have the attention they have if he was still kicking? but quality is quality.

and I was discussing with someone the other day how it coulda been post-Madlib if the circumstances were different.

It's all post-dilla/madlib and I don't think no one has surpassed even of them really. In fact, a lot of it is nowhere near as good
