Mixing mp3s using vinyl substitutes

Post by max-freakout » Thu Sep 24, 2009 9:38 pm

Ive been a vinyl DJ for many years now im finally facing up to the fact that the vinyl scene has mostly died out

Does anyone here have experience with the mp3-to-vinyl mixers like Rane's 'Serato'? And if so are they as good as they claim to be? Also is Serato the only one on the market or are there others?

Any advice greatly appreciated, ive seen a couple of DJs using Serato in clubs now but i never had a go on it myself

Hey there.
First of all I wouldnt say vinyl is dead, we're still fighting!

But yeah, Serato is great and really re creates the vinyl feel.
Also check out Traktor Scratch and M Audio Torq for lower budgets

i did say 'mostly' dead, but either way it's depressing :x

i worked in a vinyl shop in Soho (Scenario) for a few years until it closed down because of low sales, almost all the other Soho vinyl shops closed around the same time for the same reason, now there's only like 2 or 3 left while there used to be loads :i:

Great thanx that's just what i wanted to hear, a decent digital substitute for vinyl :D

are Traktor Scratch and M Audio Torq noticeably worse than serato? i mean is it worth forking out the extra money for Serato?

what do u need to run traktor?? just the time coded vinyl? i would like to make the switch form CDJs to a time coded vinyl software just because i hate burning cds and i hate not having what i want to play at a dance in the bag. the best thing about time coded vinyl is the ability to have your entire collection with you

no you need the transducer module, and the software, the same as with serato, on amazon its actually more expensive than serato

this is what you need for traktor:

Yep for any timecode setup you need the sound card that comes with the bundle, timecode vinyl and the program.
I've been using Torq for about 6 months and I couldn't be happier with it. I play radio every week with it and out when I'm gigging and it works like a charm.
Definitely recommended

I think mixers with USB or firewire outs dont need an audio interface for traktor, but I could be wrong.

it has firewire ports and supports traktor but i dont think serato.. best thing is to just check with the mixer manufacturer and see what software they support =]

first of all: f off people, give it up a little bit! vinyl is still here we all love it but i myself, with all the collection and shit, will switch in a while. i've heard there is no probs with playing out your old lovely rcords while playing mp3s with serato.

only thing is, vinyl sounds a lot better than mp3's right? and wavs are almost as expencive as buying vinyls..

I live in the Bay Area and everyone uses Serato.

However,in terms of dubstep, all the dj's I've seen(Benga, Skream, Pinch, Distance, N-type) all use vinyl. I'm pretty sure almost all Dubstep dj's from the U.K. spin vinyl. So while vinyl may be dead/dying in general, within the dubstep scene it is alive and well.

if you had traktor/serato/torq set up and then half way through a set wanted to drop an actual piece of wax is it just a case of flipping the switch on your mixer from line to phono?

or would you need to fiddle about with the wires at the back?

thats what i was questioning!
starkey wrote:With the SL1 interface, u have separate phono and lines. Lines would obviously be ur mp3s and the phono would be for playing vinyl.

The new SL3 switches on the software, so u have less wires to connect
to the mixer.
so its as simple as that - just the button or the switch - nothing more
it makes serato even better cuz you can play all of your own stuff and mp3s/wavs PLUS the vinyl PLUS use samples, effects and other shit cuz the outputs of this will be your laptops out. and everything feels the same fucking way. gold.
