To all the computer genius' out there, a question....
Okay Say I have a mac and a p.c,
the mac doesn't have wireless internet connection
the pc does have wireless internet connection
could I use a network cable connecting the 2 to access the internet from the mac?
If not are there any other things I can control on the p.c?
Like using the network cable to view the p.c through the mac if that makes any sense?
This makes me sound way more retarded when it comes to computers than I actually am but I have no idea what I would begin to search for, would appreciate any help
cheers

i think you might need the wireless AirPort.
Re: To all the computer genius' out there, a question....
forget accessing internet through mac, I just want to use my p.c through my mac,
I heard of a thing called vnc, anyone had any luck between both p.c and mac?

What kind of Mac and what OS version is on it? Also which Windows is on the PC?lowpass wrote:forget accessing internet through mac, I just want to use my p.c through my mac,

Should be a lot easier on an Intel Mac, but definitely possible on any kind. You could set up a VPN/Virtual Private Network and connect to your PC using the Remote Desktop features it has. You could also log into it using SSH, but it will probably be limited to mostly commands. You can use SSH in conjuction with VCN as well..
Check this, seems to be what you're looking for: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/r ... fault.mspx
There are also loads of remote administation software you can use, which is pretty much the same as VNC, just make sure you secure it very well with passphrases and only allow access from your mac's IP or MAC address (the MAC ID assigned to network adapters, not Macintosh) if you can. I haven't really messed with RAT's in a long time, but some popular ones are:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/symantec-pcanywhere is a popular commercial one
http://www.testplant.com/products/vine_server
http://realvnc.com (they have a Java one which can run on any OS with Java installed)
My Mac geek cousin always talks about "Chicken of the VNC": http://sourceforge.net/projects/cotvnc/
Also http://www.gotomypc.com allows you to use web interfaces to do this, but i've never used it so i'm not sure how reliable or good it is.

any remote desktop should work, as long as it's both mac and pc compatible, but this is what I was going to suggest
I would also recommend mapping a network drive so you can access the same hard drive from each computer

Cheers for all the help, hopefully I'll be able to get this sorted soon.
Soo the remote dektop, does that come with the mac? if I use it on that end and something else on the pc end will it work mixing 2 different applications?

If you have XP pro you should be able to turn on remote desktop control in the control panel.
the above linked free mac client (http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/r ... fault.mspx) will let you connect to this service. I'm pretty sure you have to have a user account on the PC with a password set to be able to remote in.
Also maybe pick up a crossover cable and connect the ethernet ports on the two computers, remote over wifi is pretty slow (even if one is plugged into your router/switch) but with a crossover cable it will be almost instantaneous.
I got a similar setup going with two macbooks over a gigabit connection and logic node for clustering. workin on turning an ibm thinkpad into a hackintosh for more clustered power

That uses RDP, as long as you setup the same remote systems on each machine you'll be good. if you choose VNC you'll have to use VNC on both. If you don't get anywhere with that use something like teamviewer. It'll be more of a pain in the long run because you'll have to generate connection IDs & passphrases on the remote machine and enter it into the local each time you connect.lowpass wrote:Soo the remote dektop, does that come with the mac? if I use it on that end and something else on the pc end will it work mixing 2 different applications?
