I recon Cyrus has been the most open and given away loads compared to other artists we have seen imo. Loads of helpful tips in this thread, nice one.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.

ez bro
just wondering if when you write a tune do you start out with an intention to write a particular style of tune or do you just let it flow and see what sound you come up with?
really enjoy the spatial elements of your music

I vary rarley set out to write a certain style. I'll usually make a drum loop and get some kind of atmosphere in and go from there.

Ez bro,
Just 2 quick questions for ya. I remember you started off making tracks in fruity like myself back in the day. FL is still my main tool, drag n drop, start banging together beats in no time. How long did it take you to get to grips with using a different daw?
Also one track I used to champion on the radio shows that never saw a release was local motive, any plans with that number??
Bigup yourself and whoevers idea is this QnA. I'll hit u up on aim as soon as I've bitchslapped my studio pc back to life, long..

It depends on what your using. You can make a track almost stright away if you know how to load things ect..but to master a daw could take years. I use cubase as my main daw and have been for the last 2 years or so and i dont think i've even scratched the surface. After fruity i went on to reason and my 1st track on that was indian stomp so making soming is easy ish but knowing it inside out will take time.
That is an old one. No plans for them golden oldies at the moment. Maybe i could bring them out on a a second cd if i get round to a new album.

so how'd "Indian Stomp" start? riddim first and then you found the sample, or the other way around? did you ever want to drop a snare in there?
the pacing and restraint in that tune is epic--an absolute monster of composition. respect!

I think its the restraint and space that really marks your production out in general.

If i remeber rightly i think i just started off with the bongos and worked from there. I never even wanted to put a clap in there but i played it to jason @ transition and he suggested that. It worked quite nice so im glad i listend to him.

Hi Cyrus,
Thanks for doing the thread. Im really interested to know what some of your production techniques are for certain things.
1. The mid-range lfo'd mental bits in tunes like Violate with Distance. Can you tell me a step by step process of how to synthesise the actual sound that you use? Is it through a sampler or synth?
2. Your drums! Do you use any breaks or anything? You always seem to get so much swing and groove in your beats! What drum plug ins do you use? Where do you get your single drum hit samples from otherwise?

Of course every mid in every tune ect is done different. In violate we used massive with 2 osc running at different pitches and loads of distortion. For the change ups we bounced down audio with the different lfo rate, effects ect then brought them back in and placed where needed.
I've never used breaks in any of my tracks. I programme them from scratch. To get a good swing i'll either turn off auto quantize and play the hats from the keyboard or just change the quantize for certain hats..that works for me anyway. I use battery 2 for my beats..i need to upgrade. Alot of my samples are what i got of a friend when i 1st started or just from free sample cd's.
