hmmm, interesting question. shinsen are indeed the bollocks but i`ve never considered a series based on subbers, i always find a series i wanna watch first then search for the best sub available. the group could provide the best translations known to man but it`s all for nowt if the series is a pile of shite in the first place. off the top of my head some of the groups i`ve trusted over the years have been animekraze, anime keep, AHQ, lunar, anbu, shinsen, anime4ever and more recently BSS.

here`s a useful resource, all subbers and all their releases listed:

Bi-annual bump.

Last good things i watched since last post.

Hajime no Ippo. Fucking amazing series. Just watch it, whether you like boxing or not.

Image

Soul Eater. Some good characters, some lame ones. Overall enjoyed.

Image

Currently watching:

Kara no Kyoukai. 7 part OVA series. Watched 4 so far. Bizarre stories, deep dialogue, complicated chronology. Some amazing animation/art direction and an excellent musical score.

Image

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. Was put off this because of the absolutely SHIT character designs but have decided to watch it due to its good reputation. Am gradually getting used to the character's cliche faces and the story is really quite good.

In other news, I just found out that the Bleach filler which just started is going to last a year. Just when it was about to get to some of the meatiest battles yet. Gah.

anything GITS is pretty much unmissable, just finished watching 2nd GIG again, such depth of storyline, politics, philosophy, science, seriously mature stuff.

Got to agree with the love for Cowboy Bebop, one of the finest animes ever, such great humour, something I really don't think carried into Samurai Champloo which was a bit of a let down imo.
I've heard that a live action Bebop is being made for a 2011 release, par. I've also heard Keanu Reeves is favourite to play Spike... PAAAAAAR.

Also big up Mecha Gundam (obviously), Patlabor, Appleseed, RaeXphon....

YES!! That ep was siiiiiiick. The whole collection was good but that was definitely the standout ep for me. If you're feeling that you without fail have to check the second short for Genius Party, 'Shanghai Dragon'. It's also by the same director and is absolutely. fucking. amazing. The other parts of the Genuis Party collection are excellent as well.

The million dollar question. I think you've crossed the lines into oktakudom when you buy the dvd boxsets, own more than a shelf of figures/memorabilia and know all the lyrics to themetunes of anime you watch (or don't watch for that matter). As a normal person who watches fuckloads of anime and speaks japanese I have to struggle against the oppression felt by true otakus on a regular basis, but i sleep sound at night knowing that i'm 8)

True man, although I like the first two films more than the SAC series. The atmosphere including music and everything is pretty different from the series.

Anyone knows Serial Experiments Lain and Boogiepop Phantom? Two very dope series with very nice electronic soundtracks.

Don't bother watching all of Bleach, it's almost a big of waste of time as watching all of Naruto. The manga is better.

Anyway, it's all about Tokyo Tribe 2. 13 episodes of pure badass plus the best art design and music I have ever seen in an anime.

The first episode was so violent that it got the anime banned from my University's anime society.

i really disagree about the naruto and bleach thing. with hindsight you can skip all filler and just tuck into pure heavy anime. i know they're the cliched series to cite but they've gained this kind of notoriety for a reason, because they're bloody sick. i'm not in any rush for them to ever finish so i don't mind abstaining from the manga and waiting years for the end to come round. everyone and their dog has tried to get me to read the mangas but as a japanese student i get a million times more out of the voices than i would from printed text, plus shippuuden has some amazing music to accompany it.

on a sidenote, i will be checking out tokyo tribes once i'm done with my current viewings. one of which is Natsume no Yuujinchou.

Can't recommend this enough. If you liked Mushishi or if you have a tolerance for a slower paced, relaxing series definitely check it out.
