haha this is great. there are some good artists that people classify as "IDM", i.e. autechre, aphex, venetian snares, and other big names in the game etc., but i agree a large majority of it is extremely boring and abstract on purpose. well put - modern art in a musical form.

Way^
Subsector's Wubstep1 off Soundcloud track...more ambient dubstep then trancey to my ears.
ds variations don't have to become sub-genres....tends to lock producers into a certain descriptor which becomes boring.

The only one of those artists I would classify as IDM is Autechre...and their live act isn't even remotely intelligent.

trance is soooo shit.

You havent experienced the full amount of shitness until you have walked past Es Paradise in Ibiza & heard it blaring, along with all the knobs in fluorescent yellow & ridiculously long spiked hair, flailing their arms with glow sticks outside. Thank god twice as nice was @ Eden that night.

I'm interested to know what elements of dubstep you've introduced to this song..... i can't really see any.
It's my opinion that the word 'dubstep' is getting thrown around a lot lately just because it's hot and cool... i wouldn't really classify caspa, rusko, etc..as dubstep and that's my main problem with them. Their music does have a place on the dance floor but it swings much more towards electro than 'dubstep' for me....
I view dubstep as a cross between dub, garage, and jungle.... can't really see any of those traits in your music....

why not go to any club in london for twice as nice than go to ibiza?

and to be honest you get knobs in flourescent's at dubstep nights pretty much everywhere except dmz and fwd et al.

Hahah, IDM...You mean that genre of music where anti-social geeks keep pushing random notes on a keyboard hoping to get something musical outta it? Aphex Twin is such a lunatic.

And yeah, I'd also like to see a Goa/Dubstep fusion eventually. The closest thing I've heard so far is at 3:25 in that suomi psytrance track.

The only one of those artists I would classify as IDM is Autechre...and their live act isn't even remotely intelligent.
Well...that sounds as stupid as saying "this track isn't trance since it doesn't put me into a trance"...It's a genre's name, get over it. We all know you can also make intelligent EDM and not be an IDM producer. Not sure I wanna go into a debate about it though, specially since you seem to think that Richard D. James and Aaron Funk aren't intelligent producers O_o... Intelligent shouldn't necessarly mean "experimental to the point of not being danceable".

Well...Amon Tobin as done a lot of different things...mostly trip-hop, IDM, breaks and DnB. To be honnest, IDM is rarely "only" IDM...I mean...most of the time it's either "IDM/ambient" or "IDM/DnB"....It's a very vague term...actually, hehe.

The fact is that even though most Squapusher stuff is really good DnB, you'd have a hard time convincing me that there's not something really different between what he does and what is generally considered DnB.
