At what point...

Post by wang » Fri Oct 09, 2009 2:24 am

...did you realize that what you wanted to do in life was make Dubstep tracks that sounded exactly like everybody else's?

Bare musicians start by learning Motzart, Bach, Beethoven, etc... The greatest Jazz artists all cite other Jazz artists as their inspiration. If your genre of choice happens to be Dubstep, its well normal to chase the sound that drew you in. Get over it. 8)

On another note, why am I always defending the underdog... :?

if you dont know where the sounds been, how ya gonna know where its going?
some say imitation is the highest form of flattery.
at what point in your life did you decide you wanted to make useless posts on the internet?
and where are your groundbreaking original tunes by the way? would love to hear em. give some honest constructive criticism.

it hink the most interesting electronic music comes from people who enjoy non-electronic genres as well

the coolest dubstep ive heard is the stuff that mixes the persons background in music with their idea of dubstep...
the garage guy making snappy dubstep...the metal guy making hardcore stuff, the dub guy etc etc.

i have a feeling those days are on the way out though

if you take your interest in sound from another dubstep artist you might end up producing something that has no feeling or "soul" not to say that you don't have a soul, just that you haven't invested it in your work.

so very true. i listen to very very little dubstep or dnb these days. sure i had my honeymoon with it, but anymore im back to my roots. so true, if you just listen to electronic music all day you just regurgitate what you hear. what i feel are some of my best tunes came from listening to "non-electronic" music and then the light bulb goes off, "hey, what if i did this with that..."

the way i look at electronic music remains the same since i first started pissing around in FL studio when i was a teenager. Man, this is sooo cool. I can take the drums from this band I really love, and the vocals from this singer who is amazing, and add this old crusty horn sample that makes my spine tingle, and in a way Ive created a super-band drawn from all my influences. I dunno thats the way ive always looked at electronic music. a way to pay homage to all the music i have loved by using the sounds in a new and unique way. i have never worried about sample clearance, and maybe one day i will have to, but for me, thats the allure of electronic music. the fact that it can be a collage of my personal tastes, and in doing so i think i can create a unique voice for myself.

not saying i havent mashed out some regurgitated trendy shit, because you know what, its fun as hell to just have a mash out in the studio and figure out how all these crazy ass sounds are made. i think there is a line to be drawn though, inbetween trying far too hard to be different, purposefully imitating your favorite artists, or just doing what comes natural. my 02 :)

I wouldn't worry until your tracks sound as good as your idle's tracks. When they're that good, then it is time to step up and make something new for people to enjoy. Or not.

This might look like flame bait, but I'm just wondering where people's heads are at. Useless posts on the internet? Bollocks. This post has a lot of use. A lot more use than asking how to make a bass sound just like producer x did in track y. We might all learn something from this. I know I just did.

I agree, Hurling. The days of people coming in from other genres and putting their mark on it has gone. I remember when people came in from some interesting places and that had a cumulative effect of attracting other people to come and have a go. We had so many influences. Then it all went to shitfuck at some point. Shame, eh? Too many people on here really need to listen to something other than drugstep. Maybe they need to broaden their horizons and listen to something remarkably different and left of field, like Drum 'n' bass, or perhaps they can come in all avant garde with some bass line house influence.

Where do we think it's all going to go if people continue this way?

u've made some good points and i been agreeing with u throughout this thread...right up to that part. its a joke right? a form of music thats been in a dead-end for 10 years is " remarkably different and left of field". naah, this must be a joke, not sure why i even responding, just making an idiot of myself replying to such flame bait nonsense.

well, if we learn a little from history, there'll be a new genre along any day now, made by ppl who grew up in dubstep, and who therefore bring a dubstep influence, but that isnt dubstep. the process will have started already.

why worry if dubstep goes/has gone shit? thats the way of the world. there'll still be good music, it'll just have a different name (and hopefully a less stupid one than dubstep).

i wasnt implying your thoughts were useless wang, just that you offered criticism with no insight onto a solution.
i wholeheartedly agree with the concept that in a perfect world every artist would sound different and people would get their kicks from sounding original rather than thinking... "fuck yeah. i made a (insert artist here) bassline. lemme add some drums to that. Oh and a sample from this movie. There we go, sounds about right."

I mentioned i wasnt taking anyones side. I think there is a plethora of knowledge to be gained from imitation, especially technique wise. once you understand a concept, you can expand upon it in your own unique direction, if you so choose to do so.
I agree with you there are many artists out there all pushing the same sort of sound. but theres obviously a demand for it so they continue to prosper.

what it comes down to is the integrity of the individual artist. do you want to stand apart or be part of the herd.
i think to step away from the herd mentality though you have to understand it. i dont think theres anything wrong with individuals figuring out their favorite artists sounds. because really by that logic, whoever the first artist to attach lfo to cutoff freq was, the rest of the spectrum of dub is just riding his/her/its cock/vag/genitals.

not trying to offend. glad this turned into a constructive conversation :D

I have to agree with OP, I mean it's one thing to try to recreate a song sound for sound as a learning experience, you'll learn about song structure, synthesis etc but I got caught up in the trying to force my songs a certain way to make people happy because they were happy with the artist I was trying to emulate.

The only way to get a different sound and be unique is to draw on those outside influences whether it be techno, metal, classical, house etc and then whatever you create you just gotta think, fuck it I made that whether you like it or not is up to you.

Agree, coolest dubstep comes from people from other musical backgrounds.
wouldnt say those days are on the way out, theres just not as many people doing it anymore,
dont think it will die out, maybe it will blow up again and occasionally "reinvent" dubstep?
if thats the case it will propably get another name, and then this post is kinda useless as
its point is the same as mico's..

this thread made me think alot about my own tunes.. sadly.. ill go reinvent dubstep now
as im such a genius..

Isn't that from a Jeff Mills quote?

"How do you know where you are going, if you dont know where you have been?"
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
