DJ Competition:Win The Opening Set At Variance - 17th Oct 09

Post by variance » Wed Sep 02, 2009 9:16 pm

Calling all dubstep DJs. This is your chance to win a 1 hour set at the first Variance night being held at The Rhythm Factory in London on Saturday 17th October 2009.

Variance is a new club night set up with the sole purpose of putting the best dubstep and dnb DJs side by side on the line up, rather than in seperate rooms, and offering DJs a chance to play a deeper and more varied selection than at other club nights.

For our first event we are lucky enough to welcome a selection of DJs who all have feet firmly planted in both genres. The main attractions will be:

Fanu

Finnish breaks wizard Fanu has been releasing music for several years now, and has released down-tempo and dubstep music as well as the drum and bass he is most well known for. Variance are delighted to be the first club in London to welcome this multi-talented one man breaks machine for a headline 90 minute set.

Fracture & Neptune

Dubstep fans will know Fracture from his releases with Compound One on Compound Records. Dnb fans will know him as one half of choppage double act Fracture & Neptune. Having released on such diverse labels as Bassbin, Inperspective, Med School and Droppin Science these guys will be celebrating the launch of their new label Astrophonica by also playing for 90 minutes.

Biorhythm

Biorhythm is the man behind Variance and his Dubstep Sessions mixes have brought him many new fans (do a search if you haven't heard them yet). On the night he will be playing a dubstep/dnb hybrid set, a taster of which you will be able to hear in the first Variance podcast, available soon.

Seid

Seid is a new artist who has just had his first EP released on darkside dnb label Mindsaw recordings. His brutal, driving sound has brought him to the attention of hard dnb fans the world over and he also has a dubstep side project in the works with Biorhythm, the first taste of which will be surfacing shortly.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So now to the competition. What we want you to do is to put together a dubstep mix no longer than 1 hour in length, including a full tracklist, and send a link to variancehq@hotmail.co.uk (or a PM on here) before October 8th.

Entrants will be judged on mixing ability, variety of material, the flow of the mix and general level of excellence. Variance is about pushing boundaries and bringing a wide range of styles to the ravers who will be attending the night.

What we don't want is an hour of anthems or an hour of wobbly basslines. In fact, we don't want 1 hour of any one thing at all. Variance is about variety and entrants will be judged as such.

If you think this is you then please get in touch. We cant wait to hear from you!

RULES:

Entrants must be 18 years or over by the night of Saturday 17th October. I.D. will be checked so sorry if you're underage.

You must be able to travel to London on Saturday 17th October and be able to be at The Rhythm Factory by 8.30pm for your set which will begin at 9, and last for one hour. You must provide all your own music but we will have vinyl decks and CDJs available for you to use.

You must be able to cover your accommodation costs (if required,) but we will pay £20 towards the cost of your travel (you must arrange this yourself).

Competition is not open to wankers or time wasters. We only want genuine music lovers to enter and we reserve the right to withdraw any offer of the set if we suspect you of being a dick (or dickette, female DJs are encouraged to enter too) :)

The winning DJ will be contacted by October 10rd. Good luck everyone!

Tickets available now for £6 (£8 OTD) from here

The first mix has been submitted and its pretty damn good. If you think you could do better and fancy playing the opening set of the night then send your mix, including tracklist, to variancehq@hotmail.co.uk.

The clock is ticking....

We've had a few more entries for the competition but we'd like some more. If you fancy getting some exposure and playing the opening set of a brand new club night then please get touch. We'd love to hear from you.

Also, many thanks to everyone who has entered so far. The standard has been generally very good. Only a couple of clangers as yet.

the opening set meaning the 9-10 or 10-11 set?
wont it be dead at this time

Winners should get a nice little residency to provide incentive for ppl to enter
there are really good dj's on this forum who need a break.
this kind of thing really helps to encourage them to show their faces.

bigup & i think i might just enter

9-10. It certainly wont be dead as a lot of people we know are travelling a large distance to come to the event and will be there from the start + hopefully the winning DJ will have some friends that will want to come and support them.

We thought this competition was a good way of giving a deserving DJ the chance to play on a big rig when they might not otherwise get the chance. As you say, there are some really good DJs on here who never get to play out so we thought Variance should be the place for these people to show what they can do.

We've decided to keep the compeition open for another week as I know there are some people who wanted to enter but didnt get a chance to so if you want to send a mix in you've still got time.

Just send a mix to variancehq@hotmail.co.uk or drop us a PM and you could be warming up for Biorhythm, Fanu etc on the night. Its an opportunity not to be missed and if you do really well we might invite you back in the future for a paid slot. Come on people, this is your last chance to enter.

Thats it! Its all over and it gives us great pleasure to announce that our winner is DJ MB! Many congratualtions to him. He impressed us with his deep and thoughtful tune selection and his tight mixing. Exactly what we were looking for.

Many thanks to everone who entered. We really appreciate you taking the time to get in touch and bad luck to those who didnt quite make it. It was a tough decision. We hope you'll all be able to make it down on the night and show your support for our winner MB. We cant wait to see what he's got in store for us. Big up MB!

Until I get:

• A computer at home
• A Facebook page
• A way to record my mixes

I will tragically remain a nobody with no way to enter these comps, which sucks balls.
I'd be all over this otherwise...

When does the comp end?
PLEASE will someone sell me:

KRKN001 - Obeah / Wolf Man - Copenhagen Massive / Eye Of The Demon
+
WAR001 - Bob Marley (Matty G remix) - War

I love you long time
