What's it gonna take???

Post by shinto » Sat Dec 09, 2006 5:46 pm

I was just wonderin' what everyone's thought on what it is gonna take for dubstep to start taking off across the pond in the states??? The country isn't so much geared toward electronic music as our English Brethren...but i don't see it being so far fetched. I mean I play songs that I get in this forum for my friends and at house parties and they really feel the vibe(suprising cause im from the dirty south and if it aint crunk and it ain't country it ain't happening). Maybe it's because i go to a school where reggae and dub music is still a staple...but i don't know. I am just tryin' to see the future of dubstep in America, and I am a both excited and a bit worried that I can't see the future when it comes to the music. So I guess my question is what steps do us stateside folk to get the movement out and if anyone across the pond have any suggestions. Sorry this is long winded I just got done an exam and I couldn't even take it because I was thinking about this topic...

that's great to hear...i'm glad that it is...haha, as i have stated i'm from a smaller city in the dirty...and so you know...we still use horses to deliver mail here...haha...but i'm glad it is. I could see it being HUUUUUGE in dallas/houston and in texas, especially with some of the producers we got on here. Especially with the slow-mo movement we have going on down here...

haha...by the way may i continue this post by saying...it is not that i was unaware that the scene here isn't happening...i was talking about more along the lines of having a scene to the reputability(is that a word???) as it is across the pond...did not mean to insult the people that i know are doing big things already over here...keep reppin' and rippin da beats..

We hold it down in Houston, esp with it being the home
of screw and plenty of the underground heads being
up on screw previously.

Just in case, here's a little wikipedia action on screw:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screwed_and_Chopped

Dubstep has taken off proper in Houston with the Gritsy monthly as
well as having a proper crew in place pushing it.

It's coming up on the fourth one and has built up a reputaion [IMO]
as being one of the top dubstep monthlies in the state not to
mention having one of the best soundsystems setup for it.

Link for the upcoming Gritsy:
http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t ... ght=gritsy

It had been going on bit's and pieces stylee before but it
didn't REALLY start going strong until Joe Nice came through to help
set it OFF with the first Gritsy droppin' the sick plates. . .

Texas producer/dj wise everyone mentioned before and
there are a few in Houston as well like:

Product
Joseph Burling
Verdict
and myself.

and I think South3rn is from Texas as well?

Dubstep is absolutely taking off in the states. It's not a matter of "what's it gonna take"....it already is.

Shit -- it took a while, but it happened. i SHOULD KNOW... been at it forever.

by the way...I love Charleston, SC. The best chicken sandwich i've ever had was @ Kickin Chicken....the one on King Street near the bookstore. I NEED one of their t-shirts again....BADLY !

i know houston would definately feel the music...chopped n' screwed just seems to mesh well with dubstep...i always do my best to throw some dubstep in when i throw on some chopped and screwed...and people just seem to dig it...when it comes down to it though...the bigger cities filter to the smaller ones so on and so forth...so being from south cackalackie(as it as termed hear with some aesthetic appeal)..my hope is that Houston's push will filter through Atlanta and then to hear...i am also surprised to not hear from a lot of Miami Dubstep producers...i am sure ya'll are there so where you at??? because miami bass has always thundered through the south...and i could see those producer at least dabbling in the dubstep scene...i don't know if a lot of ya'll listen to much rap...but could you imagine some Mannie Fresh drums and Bass on a song...that shit would sound so solid...i'm rambling right about now...so im sorry if i got off the topic i started...just trying to push the discussion and further the moment...

yeah some timbaland inspired shit would be amazin'...and i would expect it from him before any other big named producers...because he definately delves into other countries influences...indian flute has some amazing production...especially with him workin' with MIA apparently...

...and product i don't think you take shit for granted...i mean its definately not your fault your scene is hoppin'...you guys down in texas know what ya'll are doing... and keep doin' what ya'll are doin' because it is only gonna help everyone else while helpin' yourselves...hate to bring up the example again...but look at how far chopped n' screwed has gone...

nobody has mentioned Djunya yet. Top producer from all North America, and one of the best overall, imo.

8) 8) 8)

I have to say these guys are really taking dubstep in Houston to where it needs to be. Joe Nice kicked off the first Gritsy and at that moment I was HOOKED! I have always been a hard up breakbeats freak.......until Joe came to town. It was ALL about dubstep after that. Way big ups to SDF3 and Product. Those guys have their shit in check fo sho!
