i never smoke...and the rare time I do, I don't even think about opening Ableton up. it can make nonsense loops enjoyable for a good 3 wasted hours.

personally I like listening to other people music high more than working on my own. I can still listen to my own tunes if I'm lifted though...just not make it.

yea actually smoking and listening to your hard work during the day can be a great way to get out of the creator view point

damn good point! i was jsut thinking why I sometimes lose myself while producing... suddenly i don't produce, i start kicking a jam and doing a live session...

so really: can be contraproductiv, but doesn't necessarly have to be.

I like to do this:

Tell people that i'm going to try to finish a tune and bring it to the club for them to play.
A bit of pressure on me helps me push to get the track layout down fast.
Then I'll make it sparkle in the week after.

Don't mix as u go, just write the song, even if there is something you don't like, don't worry about it for now, just move ahead as quickly as you can to get the song structure down.

Indeed. But if you're having trouble writing songs, this may be the only way to go. It kind of depends on the personality going in. If you're obsessive compulsive you may never get close to finishing a song, and this balls out 'fuck it' technique can be a god send.

I still write some chilled RJD2 / Dj shadow influenced tracks as well as breakbeat and dnb.
Also i'm doing a music tech specialist degree so i get to work with musicians from all kinds of genres. It definitely helps. Music moves people!!!

I feel how the tunes going to pan out, I don't think of what stuff needs, i'm sure most people can tell if a tune is lacking something - if you dunno - get some feedback and let it sit for a few weeks

agree with both of these...nothing like blazing up and vibin on a tune youre doing, but my sober stuff is much, much better. makes me think of that kode9 interview where he said his music got a lot more colorful when he stopped smoking

Have a couple of tracks on the go,

When you want to go back to an older song that your spending loads of time on, don't (work on a new track)

When you want to start a new track, don't (go back to that older track you may have neglected)

Spending lots of time on the same track can make you lose perspective, however constantly opening up new files is never going to let you finish a song so make sure to come back to those tracks you started. If they still sound good in their basic state after a week then finish it, if not then you can bin it.

a lot of times I'll end up listening to older unfinished tunes, and may bounce down a section that seems alright...slice it up and rewarp it. sample that shit.

Sometimes its nice to not save an idea if its not working I find, you feel some sort of relief! Atleast I do.. Its just like when I paint I often throw away the canvas have done, I am not afraid to dispose of work, cause when its right - its really right and I really enjoy the piece if done, be it music or painting.

Get out of your head. You will never logically think your way into a good song. Ways to get out of head: don't smoke weed, help a friend, call a friend, meditate, take your shoes off and walk in the lawn, meditate (breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 4 second, breath out for 4, repeat for 10 min), do a random act of kindness, pray, get off your ass and hit the gym, go fishing, read the tao te ching, etc.

Dedicate time for sound design and composition, make these 2 processes completely seperate from eachother to maximize workflow.

Write a chord progression, then melodies til you find the face of the tune. The part that really sticks out. From there, discover. Let the tune take you wherever it wants to go. It may be a fucking hawaiin post rock song, but let it be. Discover the music that already exists within, then do your best to reproduce it.
